It gives her dead eyes, like a doll, maybe that was the point. But sometimes the other characters also have that so it may be the animation's team incompetence.
To be fair, animating eyes is really hard, humans are very strongly hardwire to notice the expressions in the stares.

The way her eyes were originally in shadow, making her look eerie.
The way she's leaning forward, showing a slight hint of desperation or aggression, compared to the demake's relaxed, lazy posture.
The leopard print subtly suggesting a predator.
The way the demake makes her clothes look shiny, like a business suit instead of the stylish yet comfortable clothes of the original.
And of course, the horrendous character design. Maria looks like a film actress that you've seen many times but just can't quite name. Demake Maria looks like a random 38 year old they pulled in from off the street.

using real life models and actors has been a disaster on western gaming in most cases, it worked a decade earlier for Japan with games like onimusha but games like dmc5 and silent hill convince me that the west would be better off making their own models instead of relying on actors

The irony here is, all of original SH2's characters looks were based on IRL people. TS took inspiration from Hollywood films for the overall designs, while the voice actors (who also did the mocap) provided their faces for the in-game models.
