If you liked ER then its got too many boss related QoLs that Wuchang doesn't have like bonfires at the door or stakes of marika.

The reason I compared Wuchang to early souls like DeS or DS1 is because most levels are designed to be like puzzles. There traps, seemingly unfair enemy placements etc but if you were observant enough you could always avoid hazards and gain the upper hand on your enemies. This level design philosophy went out the door with later games where every encounter is just a standard combat affair.

If you find the levels unfun to navigate then I guess that comes down to personal preference. I will say that I found the first three areas the least visually interesting, but I won't lie and say that gameplay wise there will be a sudden shift to make you enjoy it. Regarding the boss runback, there is a shortcut to make it not very long, have you got that?

Is that a bad thing with the weapons? The longsword is the balanced option, where as the spear has more range but longer animations and the dual wield is much faster but close range and less damaging. They have trade-offs.

I think it's actually really nice, since it allows for full respeccing of all attributes, compared to other games that force you to use the same weapon or be at a disadvantage for instance. It also allows you to do NG+ with a totally lvl 1 character if you wish, or a max level character with less heals, or a low weapon or any other kind of combination you want. It can be a bit overwhelming to navigate initially but it's really quite well set-up. My only complaint is I don't think there's a way to manually scroll descriptions in the UI so you have to constantly deal with the auto-scroll.

Why is it awful?
It doesn't incentivise using a second weapon until you have like 12 feathers and are level 50. Doubling up on the same weapon to maximize use of draw slash attacks is optimal 90% of the game.

Because it's used for clashing. Once you get your stuff going on, you drop using light and just spam heavies because just like other weapons, you get numerous ways to generate feathers. For DB's case, you generate one feather everytime you clash with the enemy. So just mashing heavies with DB means you have a very positive feather economy and allows you to just spam whatever spells or skills you got.

I dunno about that. I don't really call myself much of a Dark Souls fan in general, however I'd say I liked AI Limit more than DS1, but I *hate* Wuchang. DS1 was a flawed but interesting concept, AI Limit I feel like it fixed a lot of DS1's "you just have to know" bullshit and replaced it with "if you're skilled enough you'll do fine" which I think is a massive improvement over people who FAQ'd and youtube'd their way into a "no hit" build in other souls. Wuchang feels like it's completely the other way. There's a "right" way of doing a boss and fuck all room for experimentation. It's a game for people who want to look up the answers to a puzzle then feel good about getting a 100% on the test, or at the very most people who want to try 100 combinations and find the 1 good one through tedium. People like me who want to take some general mechanics and "git gud" through practice are very underserved by wuchang.

With weapons, it isn't those things because they didn't want it to be? One benefit to them having longer animations is it means you don't want to use it all the time, which is good considering how powerful they are with instant staggers on back hits. I do agree about it pushing you away from using two different weapon types until late game, but tbf that's the case in most games in the genre. They'd have to do something like make it so that every material you get upgrades every weapon at once to resolve that I think.

The game is quite fast, but it isn't designed like souls games are. You have stuff like the Clash mechanic that lets you attack at the same time as their weapon swings to block it mid swing and still hit them, and a buff that lasts a few seconds which automatically dodges a single attack and refunds the cost to use it. Many spells even have a dodge built into their casting animations. If you change your approach to suit different encounters and bosses you'll have a relatively easy time, if you're stubborn and refuse to do that you'll come back here to complain about the game.

The skeleton mages are mostly fine altho getting sniped while on a tiny elevator was pretty gay. It's the huge ass enemies just being overly tanky, the raven fuckers with the spears are way too spastic and never stop swinging while you also have to dodge other shit most of the time. The enemy encounter design really drops the ball somewhere around Zenwhu Temple and becomes outright awful in Bo Palace. It feels like they want you to just run past stuff rather than fight it to properly explore sometimes and I hate that kind of shit.

You only run past the sections where enemies are duking out against each other. Those are obvious set piece segments. Other wise, there are plenty of sections where enemies have their backs turned against you. The spear/crossbow birds are best dispatched with a backstab. Facing them head on is honestly a waste of time because of how awful their moveset is to fight against

Most of the spear niggers don't even start off with their back turned against you which is the problem. Like the very first one you run into in Bo Palace breaks out from a little alcove behind some rocks and you have a tiny walkway to fight on or eat the corruption to fight in the bloodpool. And that's kinda how all of Bo Palace feels like oerall. Visually great, actually terrible to explore. The blood spewing flowers can snipe you with a bind spell rarely, didn't even know they had that move until my second time there, that's how rarely they use it. Then there's the giant bird things, thankfully you only ever have to kill one yb a treasure chest and it melts to fire despite its gigantic hp pool. Areas in games like this shouldn't feel like a chore to explore, when the more appropriate approach to "exploring" is to just run past everything I think it's failed miserably.

Like most other things in the game, dodge into it instead of backwards or to the side for all but 2 of its attacks. The lightning laser and the spastic jumping, both have a pretty obvious windup tell before doing them. More or less the same in second phase despite all the visual stuff going on with one more aoe move to back away from.

He's ridiculously vulnerable to fire. If you're feeling pressured, just dodge into him and poke once, dodge and poke. It's pretty easy to get to his back where he's mostly harmless. One thing I've started to notice on these late game bosses is vulnerabilities and resistances matter a ton. If something does lightning, put on lightning resist gear, it'll feel way smoother. Most monster bosses do a ton of blunt damage with their slams as well.

Loss of memory is one of the early signs of feathering. By the time you reach the Bo capital it seems like he's about to succumb to it too. Surprisingly, very few npcs are actually affected by it compared to in dark souls where everyone is just handwaved as being undead. All npcs in wuchang are just normal humans.
