Why is it still surprising for a lot of people that for honor is not only alive but also has a healthy player base? Every time I tell someone I play for honor their first reaction is "People still play that game??!"

it's ~4k people on steam and what, 5k at best on Uplay? Healthy player base my ass.
I dropped this game when they started adding fantasy bullshit.

That's roughly 10k and and matchmaking takes less than a minute to get you in a match most days

That is alive though. You have to consider that For Honor is almost 10 years old now. This also isn't some MMO, it's a niche psuedo fighting game/MOBA.
I am honestly surprised why ubi hasn't pulled the plug yet. The game must be really cheap to run.

Less "how is it still alive", more "why are people still subjecting themselves to that game?". Most people who've played it for a long period of time crash out of it and never come back in my experience. The only reason anyone would carry on with it is that there's really nothing else like it on the market or they get sucked back in with a character they really wanted to see in the game.

It's definitely this. For some reason, besides the low budget deadliest warrior fighting game on the ps3, no game has ever done the historical warrior battle royal. All these hema sims like chivalry or mordhau are just knights vs knights

You mean like female warriors? That shit that was in the game since day one? The game was never a depiction of anything realistic.

Mechanically too, if I remember right the "art of battle" system For Honor uses is patented, much like the Nemesis system in the Mordor games. Nobody else can make a game that plays like FH and that gives it staying power that it really shouldn't have.

I'm a little disappointed with this character. I've wanted a duelist for a long time but this feels a little uninspired. Yet again it's another overturned character with a lazy 'I win' stance that nullifies a big chunk of characters kits and will get nerfed into the ground over the next 2 or 3 months. I can't imagine many people wanted this out of a duelist.

Their last bunch of characters have been kinda like this. The Khatun was also kinda disappointing. A mongol character without any bow and arrow in their moveset??

This too, the game used to have very clear differences in the characters and their toolkits. Now every character has to have an unblockable, a bash, a homing attack, a dodge attack, a good chunk of them get cutscene grabs/counters. It's much more boring when every character plays the same + a gimmick ability.

It has significantly fewer players than siege, and that game is dying quickly

It makes it one of the most popular fighting games, at least on PC.
I don't even compare it with Mordhau and Chivalry which require more people on the server and are dead as fuck

Well siege is a fps that has become fortnite for the past decade now. Those have always had more players. Melee combat competitive games are much much more niche.
Chiv2 for example has only 1k players right now.

For a fighting game several thousand people is a pretty healthy player base, but it's not just a fighting game, it's a 4vs4. Several thousand is good but it's not really enough to sustain itself long term, especially with people quitting the game outright because of Ubisoft's ridiculous balance decisions over the years.

I agree that the game could be in better shape, but it's pretty stable. I also thought the game was dead 3-4 years ago, but it still has those 5k people. Ubisoft is even investing more money in it these days with characters having motion capture again. The latest character is an absolute anomaly in terms of how unique she is.

True, it's hard to believe it made it that long honestly. I remember how fucked the release build of FH was and it's really surprising that Ubisoft didn't pull the plug on them then and there.

You also have to consider that numerous failed Ubi extraction and hero shooters have been shut down in the past several years meanwhile FH somehow is still chugging along. It's not like the game is even P2W or has heavy cosmetics. Steel is really easy to farm in game.

>It's not like the game is even P2W
I'd kind of disagree with that. I think Ubisoft depends on the casual loop of dropping a new overturned hero that disregards half of the game's mechanics. People buy the hero and play with the broken mechanics as long as they can. As soon as they get nerfed people stop playing because who the fuck wants to play For Honor now? Ubisoft announces a new overturned hero and the cycle repeats.
There's obviously enough whales that engage in that cycle for Ubisoft to keep doing it.

Ubisoft is surprisingly persistent when it comes to supporting their games. The only games they abandoned was XDefiant and Rainbow Six Extraction
>>717332356
>You also have to consider that numerous failed Ubi extraction and hero shooters have been shut down in the past several years
???
Are you hallucinating or what? XDefiant was a Call of Duty clone, and Rainbow Six Extraction was a horde shooter
They didn't abandon any games except these ones. Division 2 is still receiving updates, as are Riders Republic and even obvious failures such as Skull and Bones and Star Wars Outlaws. For Honor is nothing unusual for Ubisoft.

Because despite being a "fantasy" game about different cultures fighting in a valhalla-esque setting, they all look the most bland version of whichever culture they represent. They made a fantasy game in which the main sell point is that everything looks "realistic" aka boring as hell.
