Timed inputs in an RPG is the most retarded, counter-genre mechanic ever invented that completely ruins a game and you can't convince me otherwise, it only serves to annoy you and distract from the meager offering.

Not really, if anything it keeps me invested in the gameplay and prevents just slamming the A button over and over again through the battles.

Why do Mario RPGs mog every other turn-based JRPGs ever made?. I can barely keep my eyes open playing FF6 and FF7, but I can replay a Mario RPG and have a great time.

Mario RPG is my first niggas-in-a-row game so I pretended to do time hits in Chrono Trigger, FFVI, and so on. It should be in every JRPG to make it more interactive IMO.

I remember quickly getting bored of it desu. It works as an entry level rpg, but it's way too easy to break in half, especially with action commands absolutely breaking any scaling the game has.

Kinda agree.
It's all about balance. I like the way Paper Mario games (64 and TTYD) do it because reaction commands aren't so punishing or hard to pull off that the game suddenly turns into parryslop. They're still turn-based RPGs at heart.

If anything, I want timed imputs to be more punishing if they're included instead of just being a way to cheese most if not all of the combat.

The mechanic itself is fine. The real issue is that devs think this brainless mechanics is genre defining and make a ultra casual RPG that is completely trivialized by it.

Maybe RPG-only retards are impressed by it, but as a genre idort who has played multiple reaction heavy genres, it's obvious how it affects the game design in a dentrimental manner. It's lazy.

I mostly just find it annoying because pressing a to the timing gets boring fast, especially because it breaks the game in half once you get used to it.

Defensive action commands suck.
Picking a move and it having an action command associated with it that kinda mimics the motion of the move (like charging the hammer in paper mario) is great. Also in P5 blasting homos with your gun feels great.
If I'm in the mood for parrying or dodging attacks, I'll go play real action games like Souls, Nioh or DMC.

Depends. I think the way E33 did it was extra retarded and made defensive tactics require no deeper thought. Timed inputs on offense can be okay if done in a cool way

I don't like turn-cringe combat, but timed inputs does make them slightly more bearable. I think the Paper Mario series has the best implementation since there are only two characters, that way there are less turns to perform timed inputs and the mechanic doesn't become annoying.
Anonymous No.717329968
>>717327440 (OP)
Yeah. It worked with the Mario games because they never wanted to be pure RPGs, they wanted to expose kids to RPG mechanics and eventually get them into the actual ones. It's explclitily for the audience who finds turn-based games to be too daunting because they don't know how to strategize with resources and stats.
The problem is when they claim to be actual ones, or even better than the pure turn-based games. Then you fundamentally misunderstood the appeal of the genre entirely, the whole point is that I cannot simply decide to avoid getting hit or do more damage by pressing buttons at the right times, so I have to build my party, manage my resources and use various tactics to defeat the opponents. Or just become stronger by repeatedly fighting encounters, but that's the boring way to play them.

Depends on how much they matter and how much grinding there is in the game. If you need to grind for hours and you absolutely need timed inputs for random enemies it's a bad idea. If there's little or no grinding there's no problem. Or if you can grind without the timed actions and go on auto mode
