Filthy casual JRPG enjoyer going blind into the Persona series. I have P3R, P4G and P5R on steam waiting. Which one should I pick and why? Also which one is the shortest? (I have a hard time finishing RPG)

You shouldnt play JRPGs if you look for short games, but answering the question p3 is the shortest one and p5r is around 130-150hr

I know it's pretty common for JRPG to be very long but I managed to finished some of them (FF10/13, GBF Relink) so I want to dive into the Persona series I just have no idea which one is the the most casual friendly. 130-150hr is maybe too much for me so not P5R i guess

You can play them in any order you like, they're all pretty good. Maybe start with 4G since the game is a technical downgrade to the PS2 version, it'll be pretty jarring going back from P3R/P5R.

The stories don't connect in any meaningful way so playing in order of release(p4g->p5r->p3r) would reduce friction in what would be otherwise moving backwards gameplay wise.

Out of those 3, I'd say that you should play P4G first since it's the oldest. P3R and P5R both have the gameplay and graphical upgrades while P4G is a port of a Vita game which is an enhanced edition of a PS2 game.

Ok so you all agree with P4G. But is it only for the PS Vita graphics? Because I really don't mind "old school" visuals and judging from the gameplay on the steam page the game looks quite good even for now. I was wondering about the mechanics and the pacing of each game more than the visual aspect to be honest.
I will definitely not start with P5R if it's such a long episode so I guess it's time for P4G huh

It's more because P4G's gameplay is the weakest of the 3 now. If you were to play it in order you'd have a pretty good time with 3R and then suddenly you'd lose a bunch of QOL and gameplay improvements with P4G before they all suddenly come back in 5R. Might fuck with your perception of how good P4G is.

Persona 3 is the shortest from what I remembered. It introduces most new Persona mechanics the easiest I think. Persona 5 is loaded with a bunch of dialogue but it also has the most fleshed out dungeons and such. But sometimes I feel Im playing a visual novel because you barely take a step without characeters pointing out stuff or overexplaning things three times minimum.

I had the best experience when I played P3 and P4 when they launched way back on PS2. I finished them and enjoyed them a lot. But I havent finished P5 despite its qualities. I only got to about the 3rd or 5th dungeon on my OG run and Royal playthrough respectively.

Just play them in numerical order.

4. Besides being the best one, the other two are newer with a lot of gameplay updates and quality of life changes that would make it harder to go back to. You're either going to love 4 or realize the series isn't for you anyway.

I beat P3SP, P4 and P5. The only one of them I had trouble finishing was Persona 5 because one of the dungeons at the end REALLY fucking sucks, i dropped the game for a month or two before going back to finish it. 4 was fucking excellent, 3SP was good despite it being a chopped up version of the actual game
As other anons have said, you have the worst versions of each game, P3FES and original P4 are the ones to play if you can. I haven't touched P5R but i've heard it adds a lot of stupid shit - P3R just gets the color palate wrong and it clashes with the emo tone of the game, but I'm sure the fluid convenience of modern JRPG combat is nice and smooth.
Persona 4 is by far my favorite of the 3 games, but they all have their strong points. P3 has the best atmosphere, 4 has the best cast, 5 has the best QOL/most fluid menus and combat (i assume P3R somehow is a bit better since its newer, though)

P3 Remake loses some soul due to some odd color and lighting choices but it's fine otherwise.
P4 Golden is the definitive edition with a lot more content and quality of life improvements, but some don't like it because of minor graphical downgrades compared to the PS2 version since Golden was for the Vita.
P5 Royal is just a straight upgrade in every way except for a few minor points that aren't worth going back to the original for.

after that you can play P3R and P4G in any order
P4R isn't coming any time soon, so there is no point in waiting

I kind of thought that was the whole idea with personas combat, you think ahead what your party AI would do. Feeding into the whole concept of socializing to strengthen yourself by understnading others.
Doesn't it make the game just too easy, considering you already had the ability to summon different personas yourself to balance that mechanic out?

It feels like youre just giving the player way too much power and going against the themes of the game by not using its mecahnics. It wasn't busted or anyting imo, I finished Persona 3 even when I was a dumb teenager with the AI mechanics and giving orders.

OP here. I didn't expect so many different opinion on which episode is the best to start the series. Thank you guys but I think i'm going P4G > P3R > P5R because the length of the 5 is horrifying so I prefer to be sure i'm hooked by the games before even starting this one. P4G looks comfy while the two others looks more edgy/dark. Also thanks for all the recos about the OG version and all but I bought the remake/ultimate edition already for all of them and I'm not going to pay again sorry
