I think it's the Essentia introduction scene in Yiik that reminded me of the writing in IJ. There's a great deal of verbal diarrhea dedicated to describing the layout of the room, just like many pages of IJ. But in a visual medium like a video game, you don't need to tell the viewer what the room looks like - they can see it. And that's just one example.
I know Murakami and IJ were eventually added to their works cited, but my mind went to IJ since that is the only "postmodern" book on the list that I have ever read.

Yeah, and the wild part is that breaking the cycle isn’t even guaranteed to work. It's all tied into the meta-narrative stuff-Alex being this unreliable narrator who constantly rewrites reality. So every time they "kill" Alex, they’re really just pushing themselves deeper into his constructed version of reality. It's like trying to tear down a house while stuck inside the blueprint.

It's the point, but because the original release never did anything to outright show that this is intentional, it comes off as having no understanding of chronology. RunningShine himself even says "the whole setting is a lie" but because there's no payoff for it you just get bullshit.

This is probably the greatest flaw in YIIK's story. There is enough flaws in the reality of the game world where it's noticeable but doesn't draw enough attention to itself to show the paradox in the world or really make it plot critical. Then because the story itself was hard to follow and the original gameplay was complete garbage people just wrote off the time paradoxes as bullshit as well.

It did not help at all that Andrew threw a fit saying people didn't understand the game (he is technically right) so people just assumed he was being pretentious (which is also technically right)

You have to make people want to engage with your work. That's how creating art works, you can't just expect them to immediately lock in just because they're experiencing something, and if what they're experiencing is hot garbage game design and irritating writing, served with some LEMONADE on the side, of course they aren't going to analyze it at the level the game wants to be. Game's gotta earn it retard.

Heartbound's problem is that the initial concept might seem fine (Not my thing but whatever), but because the developer has taken 8 years to make 1.75 chapters and never expanded on some parts it advertised (The combat system for example) while dragging his heels on certain story elements. With a good story you're correct, because it would turn on naturally. You don't go into everything with an analytical lens, especially not video games unless reviewing them is your full time job (and even they don't)

But with a shit story like YIIK, which gives you net to nothing to work with, yes you would have to go out of your way to connect any dots. Connecting the dots isn't even rewarding, you just get "Alex is a shitty poser manchild" which you already knew, its depth doesn't say anything beyond what's said on the surface level.

Biggest problem of the base game for me is how much meandering happens with no final plotline there is until the Essentia shows up. It had a good hook (Girl gets kidnapped by entities, do what you can to find her) and even a good subversion (Chasing wild conspiracies is going to ruin your life), but it jumps from point to point with no cohesive throughline other than Alex is not a good person.
I.V. addresses a lot of these issues, and doesn't frustrate me with the gameplay in the time where plot doesn't happen. I still don't fully like the game, but I can at least say I enjoyed it more.

Thank you, I've said this for years in these threads now. It is an interesting plot point but not something that's ever pointed out in fiction, and it's definitely one of those kinds of things where you need faith in the storyteller to believe it's intentional, but seeing as almost nobody has any, it's not weird to see why people keep bringing it up as a flaw.

It's because it feels like an excuse in the average player's eyes or is actively malicious in some cases for some people. One of YIIK's most bad faith reviews was from a podcast called YIIK pics and they treated the game like the devs raped their family and mostly had actual bad faith a majority of the time when playing/reviewing the game.

It is weird in and of itself to read a story without faith in the author. It's not weird to notice plotholes and stuff but to react to people telling you "no that was explained in X scene" with "it's not fair to expect me to pay attention to the story so that doesn't count" to me is just

YIIK's *pretense* is (ironically enough) not about how it handles metaphysics or spirituality poorly btw, but it being a fun game people would be willing to engage with out of visceral enjoyment
does anyone remember that part on 31.12 where alex pretty much admits that the only reason he never paid much mind to all the anachronisms and inconsistencies is because he WAS HAVING A FUN ADVENTURE?

>You're twisting the word "pretense"
picrel, and that's not twisting, but wordplay
i thought fans of postmodernism would understand and appreciate the nuances of the written word, but oh well

>What am I not understanding here
the big gotcha near the end of the game hinges on alex yiik, who is (you) as a player surrogate don't even start with I.V shit, never really thinking about rpg combat and weird surreal shit, because it's simply "supposed to be like that"
it's like one of them undertales, with XP and LV gotcha near the end, which works decently well if you weren't spoiled on the premise of "a game where nobody has to die", unlike in YIIK
i don't think you even need to get into the technicalities of the story, when THE BIG MOMENT falls fucking flat, the devs have clearly failed
that's the "pretense", the failure to be one of those "quirky eartbound-inspired rpg about depression" because nobody actually wanted to go on an adventure with alex
Anonymous No.717393354 [Report] >>717394146

Understanding the nuance of the written word is exactly why I understand you're twisting the definition you retard. By your usage you could call fucking basketball pretentious because "it sets out to be a fun game and fails because I don't like it".
>Alex is an audience surrogate
Oh you're just retarded lol
Anonymous No.717394146 [Report]

if i call the game bad rather than pretentious, will you just go full relativist then?
if you have nothing to posit yourself, feel free to go YOU DON'T GET IT already, you should know that nitpicking is a much more effective tactic against YIIK if only due to its sheer wordcount
>uhm ayckshually the player character is not an audience surrogate because he is a defined character
alex is no different from any other player character with his own dialogue, and once the game blows its load at 31st, the whole thing is revealed to be a story-within-a-story, that alex conveys to (you), his alternate in another world
same as alex in some ways, but still different, ya know, kinda like the relationship between a videogame player and a player character
looking forward to "unreliable narrator" cope even after this el-em-ay-o

>People always find flaws with the game that aren't really flaws
Nigger the generic battles taking minutes at a time and full of stupid minigames while dogshit music played wasn't something people had to dig up to find
The 100% guarantee that you never played YIIK yourself or I guess even watched a full lets play of it is that you assume Alex was the only one with the pretentious and wordvomit dialogue. Jesus christ the sections where Vella cites off what are essentially paragraphs from wikipedia explaining the meaning of a scientific term then doing that over and over and THAT'S the fucking dialogue for the scene has nothing to do with Alex in the slightest.

If the dev had centred all the retardation around Alex specifically, I think a lot more people would assume that it's supposed to be his character trait. But it plagues everyone in the main cast and it becomes obvious it's a flaw in his writing style rather than any actual attempt at some subtle characertisation (though Alex' narration being wordvomit instead of just his dialogue would be completely unnecessary as well in that case)
Maybe the re-release or whatever came out recently is better, I don't think I want to touch it for a few more years.
