They really did. The fact that people still get so amped-up about FromSoftware games in the year of our Lord 2025 shows how truly awful the competition is.

action? souls slop has more in common with turn based combat than action. this shit is beyond awful, only a faggot would play this trash.

More liked ruined hack & slash games for decades, everything is slow and passive "souls-like" garbage nowadays. Go fuck yourself retard.

i fucking love spamming r1 and occasionally circle
its so engaging spamming one button
and i love the fact that everyone attempting to make an action game copies it

It's insane how much DaS completely changed the landscape of gaming, and then completely failed to innovate in any capacity.
Their two best games that accomplished something positive post DaS, Sekiro and BB, were completely lost in the dust.

I think a part of the reason it works so well is that the stakes are so high on these grounded swings and thrusts that each one feels like it counts. Each action the enemy takes could mean life or death and you could be deep in an unknown dungeon and lose a lot of exploration and souls. You take the average action game like DMC, and not only do enemies have much less say in the fight, but even if they do manage to get you, you will only go back to the beginning of the fight. In a way the traditional action game is much more casual. That's why they fail as adventure games, and why it's actually really shitty that Fromsoft keeps increasing the save room/bonfire counts.

izuna drop is the coolest move in gaming history. So spamming it is infinitely more fun than whatever the fuck this is

enemies block, dodge, and pressure you very well in ninja gaiden, especially on higher difficulties, it's much deeper than the completely reactionary playstyle of soulslikes.

Had this argument with a souls fan and told him I don't think souls games are that special and not that fun to play and it went like this:
>You didn't play them
I played DS1&3 and ER
>You didn't beat it
I beat them
>You're bad at them
I beat most of DS1 bosses first try
>You didn't finish them
I finished them all
>You didn't play them long enough
I have 100+ hours in DS3 and beat it 8 times
>You don't get it

Why are they like this?

It didn't save action at all. It helped devs realise that games could be more than corridor shooters with no difficulty or nuance though.

You don't 'innovate' on perfection.
They got it right the first time so all they gotta do is up the scale.
Imagine saying this about another franchise. The next Arma should be about boxing. The next Ave Combat should be about tanks.
Stop trying to turn Souls games into Mario where every game is a bundle of gimmicks for the sake of it.

if they are going to scale up the enemies they better scale up their ai and combat mechanics instead of scaling up their strings and delays

It was supposed to save RPGs but then became too powerful for its own good and was corrupted by the evil forces of reddit and the journalist industrial complex into a wannabe action game that has plagued the entire human race with parryslop and rollslop the way Breath of the Wild infected everything with "open world." We lost, unironically.

Because people like creating characters that reflect their gameplay preferences.
