You fix it by realizing there'll always be some autist that goes "heh, this isn't spooky at all" while playing the game at 12PM with all his lights on through speakers and with his friends behind him mocking how not spooky the game is too. The best horror games are games with good stories putting the player in believable scenarios where bad things can happen to them, not having a unity asset cockslap you across the face while your tinnitus gets aggravated by unpleasant noises.

I can't think of a single time a story made any game scarier, you could have all the award winning writers you want, but a good plot doesn't mean shit if the atmosphere is ass and the jumpscares are tame at best.

Only use female protagonists.

The monsters could be a mundane biker gang, you don't need "le spoopy" nonsense, the hook is a vulnerable cute girl who can't just fight them like the player(a man) would.

This is going yo sound weird, especially to tiktok effected zoom zooms. All the best rated horror of the past was comfy as fuck.
Just a slow burn atmospheric horror in a location you wanted to sit down, drink some tea, and read a book.
Only game that even comes close now is RE8. Its 100% what the SH2 remake missed.

Not really. The remake was just as good for that atmospheric burn.
It just gave you a new choice to fight since unlike the OG, you weren't forced to flee most of the time. I took the game slow and explored just like I did before and only fought when I absolutely needed to, and it was great.

I stopped playing the game because overuse of bland cinematic violin music was jarring as fuck, it's the horror equivalent of laugh track and it was a huge turn off for me.
They made the game immersive yet they shove a cockroach band in your ears signaling you when you're supposed to be scared or not.
And no I'm not going return to the game with muted music because that's not how they intended the game to be.

Something I thought about is that suicide is like a mind virus, considering suicide is actually a strange idea in most circles so when it enters discourse people actually start considering it.

The suicide forest I think is a part of that mind virus, people think "What if I were hung in the forest? where would my spot be I wonder..."

Nothing, they are an important part of the horror formula.
But those two whined about them, so ostensibly they have good examples of things that are scary without using them.
Hint: they don't exist.

I think the Graphical progress made it a bit more difficult.
A good part of horror is the stuff you don't see and you often left to fill in the blanks. Fear of the unkown and all that.
This is why these goldsource horror mods remained actually scary. Granted L4D can be scarry too but for completely diffent reasons.
This is why there is this flood of PS1 style games. Less detail allows viewer to fill in the blanks and make scares more effective.
Granted more realistic look can be effective too. Look at FNAF JR's

My issue with jumpscares is they're usually all surprise and no dread. You need both to make it work. Some goofy fucking mask going OOGABOGOABOOGA doesn't scare me and rarely even surprises me. You gotta add stakes to it, you gotta make some kind of realization come with it for it to work. Opening a door and suddenly seeing a biker with a fuck-ugly mug and a crowbar he's about to beat you to death with is surprising and instills dread because now you're fearing for your life.
I've still yet to see a jumpscare that instilled the same dread in me as when I realized an infection that took sight from my left eye resulted in permanent blindness in that eye. That's consequence, it's horrifying, it was a feeling that nauseated me every goddamn waking minute for months. But I think it's possible if they actually figure out how to mix dread in with the shock.

Eh, I'm better with no depth perception than most people are with two eyes so I don't really care. Benefits of being raised by a carpenter. I just use it more as a point of reference that the strongest fear a person can feel is consequence-based. Random arbitrary surprises instill no fear, you need to actually produce a reason to feel fear from whatever is accosting you. Darkwood does not jumpscares but it's super rich in consequence-based mechanics that help amplify proper fear responses, as well as having a narrative that genuinely can instill dread because it also discusses the consequences of some things.

This is probably going to be unpopular but have actually scary things in your games, when I say scary I don't mean spooky ghosts or monsters, but things that you should genuinely be terrified of in real life. Look at this template:
>Green = Real and dangerous, can happen to you in real life and will hurt you or kill you, you should naturally be very scared of these things
>Red = Not actually real or no actual danger therefor you have no logical reason to be scared of it

Games like Outlast and Condemned are scary because most of the things trying to torture and kill you are homicidal psychopaths that exist in real life and even though the chance is rather small, it could technically happen to you.

> seeing a biker with a fuck-ugly mug and a crowbar he's about to beat you to death
tried to pull this shit on me to make me drop the charges. I was out and my giant Maori flatmate chased the cunt off. Someone gave out my address probably for money. The feeling of betrayal and paranoia is true horror, I can't think of any games that capture the former but Aliens Dark Descent and Alien Isolation def capture the latter.

How are you with driving now? My depth perception seems to started relying on other queues than parallax and I only notice its gone in very specific situations

The main problem with horror IMO is the limited focus on sound. Top spooks in films often come from what people hear, not what they see and vidya shouldn't be ignoring this aspect. This is something alien isolation did pretty well with given you actually only see said alien a handful of times but you can sure as fuck hear it creeping around.

Also some good HDR would nice for that fine granularity in dark shades without the whole scene blowing out because the heroine lit a match to see.

A fallen tree is attributable to nature. I live in an urbanite yankee utopia with a murder rate of once every eight years (and of those two murders in the past ten years, both were murder-suicides over marriage bullshit) and I've seen trees fallen in the road after hurricanes and car-accidents. Shit just happens.
Nailboards? That's intelligent design. That's how you know someone's trying to get you hurt at the minimum. And THAT is scary.

RE1-RE0 is definitely that for me. One thing the remakes have ditched that I think really hurt it was the music. I miss when each area had its own atmospheric theme that was instantly recognizable. Like if you were listening to the soundtrack, you would be able to instantly identify the library theme, or RPD first floor, or Marshalling Yard, etc. The sounds of the building creaking and raindrops tip-tapping on the windows are nice, but not a worthy replacement.

At least Bloober appreciated that Akira Yamaokaโ€™s music and sound design is just as much a part of Silent Hillโ€™s DNA as the fog or the creatures that inhabit it.

The issue is that's too much of an opening fakeout. A hard and fast start of "You are being hunted" by having an obvious trap right there can immediately kick up fear. Also despite being just a tree, nailboards are a bit more primitive and help sell the idea these guys are assembling tools specifically to harm you and they're not going to be efficient, they're going to be ugly and hurt.

The Hills Have Eyes would make for great vidya. Lots of mutants to sneak passed/fight, and they like using traps. I imagine it like a Metal Gear Solid 3 but you don't have high quality military gear, just old dirty weapons like handguns and hunting rifles that the killers have gathered over the years. Depending on how fantastical you want to make the mutations, you can have a lot of variety for stalkers/boss fights.

This is actually a retarded take when it comes to horror. Horror is not something that needs to be "revised" or "updated." The human fears of the dark, and snakes, and spiders, and the unknown, are intrinsic to our being - the culmination of thousands of years of evolution. If you pretend that "the boring tropes" don't scare you, it's because you live such a sheltered and secure life that you've never had to face any real adversity and your fear response has been trained out of you. You're like a mouse that has toxoplasmosis - you've been conditioned to ignore things that SHOULD scare you.

This is true. I never considered suicide until I knew someone who did it and now I consider it a valid option (if things ever get bad enough).

Kek. Horror games suck on a technical level. Even lore being depicted in gameplay isn't a thing. It's a shit genre, in vidya as in movies. Likely due to the production value. It's easy to make horror media, cheap, too. It shows.

Horror games rely too much on just the visual part of the senses. More often than not it also tries too hard playing the "humans fear the unknown" spooky lore type shit.

Put as much equal focus on the other senses. Audio. Ambience and the works. Even touch if you can somehow masterfully script a controllers vibration.

Fear of the unknown is just one thing people are scared of. Losing your own mind is another, make the player (not the character, no the player themselves) feel like theyre going crazy. Play into paranoia, audio and visual hallucinations. Make them tremble at the thought their mind is failing them to the point where they legit might be scared they will develop schizophrenia if they keep playing. Make em feel like alzheimers/dementia patient who just got lost and doesnt know where or when he is.

Shit like that.
You can only do so much with scary looking creatures and encounters of "unknown paranormal/cosmic force"

Like fuck did no one realize body horror is not what made The Thing a masterpiece horror film but the paranoia aspect?
It seems modern horror games only saw the monsters and were like "Oh so thats what we need to do! Write that down! Ok we got our formula!" And then left the theater before the movie finished

Toxoplasmosis in mice IS desensitization to things that they should fear. Fear is something you should actively force your brain to remember, if you lack proper external stimuli to evoke it.
>as they grow older
From Dracula in the 1930s to modern horror movies, adults have always been scared of them and by them. This is not something that diminishes as you get older, if your brain is processing its chemicals properly.
Acting tough and pushing through fear is one thing, but denying that the fear exists entirely is admitting that something has gone wrong in your brain.

And Im mad that because of trans by dayblight all future and current slasher games are some fucking sweefest encouraging esports faggotry where it has no buisness making things more complicated for a villains objective to be other than. Find em, kill em.

Like since when does Michael Myers just not deliver a final blow but instead puts people on hooks and since when does any slasher survivor feel the need to sneak around and turn on generators or whatever instead of getting the fuck away from the villain.

So fucking stupid. May Makahala deliver a fiery vengeance the equivalent of 1000 burning comets on those who turned a genre that by all intents and purposes should be the most turn ya brain off, relax and slash/survive type game into some Adderall riddled sweaty competition.
