Honestly, this kinda made me lose my faith in Final Fantasy. If a small Fr*nch team can make something like this with only a few dozen people, how can Square Enix not do it with 4000+ employees?
Makes me miss the Squaresoft games.

That the team was small is probably a big part of why it turned out good. A couple dozen people who are passionate about a project will always accomplish more than a couple hundred just working for a paycheck.

It's also a bit like it was with Disco Elysium. It's made by people who actually take pride in their labour as part of their philosophy. Communists in case of DE, Freemasons in case of Clair Obscure.

They could and can. The people left in charge at Square Enix simply dislike Final Fantasy which is why they refuse to make games that actually play like Final Fantasy.
Also shoutout to Mistwalker's Fantasian. It actually plays like Final Fantasy.
