Gamedev
Why aren't you a gamedev? its easy, the engine does like 90% of the work.
its not the 90s anymore you don't have to be particularly smart.

I'm working on it. Coding is easy and fun, I dip into it whenever I feel like it. Assets are what's difficult. Music, models, icons, etc. Currently trying if I can make a pipeline that converts your usual 3D animation into 2D sprite work.
No, AI does make it all easy. You still need to figure out your style, put the output into the right format, clean it up, and make sure the entire work is consistent. I've seen games shat out that are indistinguable from a 12 year old's first RPG Maker project starring the first page of google image search.

I think the consistency aspect is gonna be the most important metric by which games are measured going forward. People (even the non art-types) will become hypersensitive to the slop and vehemently reject anything that feels like a one-shot gen, regardless of whether or not it was AI generated. I've personally been kitbashing together ai gens and doing paintovers and other modifications, slowly working towards finding a novel style. The tech for generation is moving so fast I feel like the only thing that's futureproof is developing the concepts and "ground truth" resources that could then be later fed into a better model, or have enough examples to finetune a LoRA.

Picrel are some rough kitbashes, I really like the sort of weird psychedellic patterns that Dall-e 3 put out initially, and then downsampling through Retrodiffusion gives me a good resolution to start cleaning up manually.

Frustrated. Iโ€™ve been reading through GameMakerโ€™s documentation and itโ€™s very informative, but I still feel lost and arenโ€™t sure what to prioritize in terms of what to learn coding. I can get a character to move, and I even played with an array to make a lookup table for movement speed. By jumping is still clobbering me. Similar to how Dead Space makes good use of it and how Revengeance has it as a feature. Taking off limbs and appendages from enemies to change their behavior and to have some visual spectacle. Of course I'd need to put my mind to work to figure out how to incentivize the player to vary up how they approach engagements, instead of just cutting off a dude's leg and bolting. Maybe adaptive AI like in MGS3 and 5 or something.

true if you go for better looking assets, but that means sacrificing % on something else like design, plot, world, etc. your pic rel looks cool but spending that time in art means it more than likely has derivative design, not much of a plot and a shallow world. which is ok, its no different than deciding on lesser quality assets and spending that time on the other aspects instead.

make one weapon out of two. Got a lance and an axe? What about a lance-axe? Wait, that's a halberd... Maybe a sword on a stick? Wait, that's a lance... You could also try putting things on sticks, like a gun on a stick, or chains, like a bunch of little axes tied to a chain, like a flail of axes. Peyote could help.

Yeah, probably mistakes on your end. If you're letting the size of context grow (lots of completions in a single "chat pane") then the quality of the output degrades significantly. Learning how much and what context to include is the key to getting the most out of transformer based models.

That's what I was doing, but it's not really looking good. I also looked at the mortal shell weapons. Their design process is likely identical to yours. I also tried to combine melee and ranged.
There's some media that has invented weaponry. Mortal shell, star wars and bloodborne come to mind. Gunblade is another established classic.

Haha, lol no. I am testing what works and what does not for the animation in the cutscenes of my game. My hope was that I could make Rokoko work with the characters I have that have non-ARKIT blendshapes. It works, but it's not great. Then I applied ARKIT to the models and did some testing. Still not great without heavy cleanup and custom scripts. With the automated route, I have a very consistent and controllable output.

If you wondering what kinda game, here is a sneakpeak.

Icons need to be svgs, get inkscape, it's good enough. Boxes and whatnot have to be written in your UI framework. If you just display images, you'll get horrible scaling issues.
For fancier effects you'll likely need to write your own shader code.

And if you're making your own assets, get a pen tablet. You don't need one with a screen, just make it large enough to work with. Test with pen and paper beforehand to see what size you need. Look whenever the new ones come out, then get the previous one on sale.

I should correct myself: The typical flat icon like hamburger menues, a telephone symbol, the https symbol see in the url field of your browser, those need to be SVGs. If you want fancy displays like the skill icons in WoW then you do need bitmap images, and you'll likely need to draw those.

Maybe render images of your icons and downsample them so they are crunchy and pixelated or something? Or try some Ocarina of Time prerendered style icons?

Just some ideas, it's a small thing.

Are you going to try for the full func godot workflow where you make custom entities and build your whole level in trenchbroom, or just make the levels in trenchbroom and add all interactables and enemies in Godot?

I'm excited to see more info on the blender / godot addon that is supposed become available with the new Blender Studio game that was made with Godot. Honestly it doesn't work, especially not while everything else is animated normally including her mouth. Making the game run on 30fps is much more natural looking than forced.

I remember a discussion on a certain h-game's d*scord channel where taking an existing 60fps animation and cutting it like that produces dissonant choppy results, while animating on twos "manually" results in a more organic feel, but is harder to pull off unless one is particularly skilled in motion animating.

been cracking at a bullet hell typing game for some months now. it's a bit movement based, as you maybe can tell by the arrows on the HUD. i was inspired by movement shooters and the P meter in the older mario games. rewards you for staying on your toes while typing.

right now the combat feels... just okay. i think i need to add the obvious stuff, like some sort of death animation for the enemy. but also some animations when you type out the correct word, like perhaps some lasers that shoot out of the text input box and go right into your enemy, or something. anything to make it feel like your typing hits real hard.

i've also been composing the music. i really like electro and chiptune sounding stuff, things you'd hear in older flash games.

the area in the webm is a WIP. i'm kind of slacking real hard on environment/level design. i used to tell myself i just didn't like working with tilesets and such but then i look at my non-gamedev drawings and see that i barely put in the effort for any kind of background. everything will still have that green, computer look though. hope i chose a good set of colors.

I think it's something with how the textures got downscaled, they look extremely grainy and maybe could use some smoothing out. It makes it difficult to look at. The textures in the webm looked good, though.

You start out with the Casual Armor since it is Fygoon's suit of choice and the other armor sets are kept in Fortress Fygoon. The issue is that the other suits of armor are locked in display cases made of an indestructible, transparent material. How do you unlock it? With a key, of courseโ€ฆbut the keys are scattered around Frydar Island for some reason (havenโ€™t thought of why) while the young Dragon was gone, so you have to explore different areas and hidden caves to find the keys you need.
Simply put: they're overpowered, but you need to find them first and it's your choice to equip them. Now if you really want overpowered, wait until I implement the Steam Armor.

Working on my game devolved to a point of negative productivity - I was so out of it that I was breaking things and moving backwards, not sleeping because I was so stressed out and angry at myself - so I just stopped working on it for a while until I felt like I wanted to return to it again. When I started daydreaming about it again I knew it was okay to go back. Now I'm looking at all the things I was so autistically furious over and I just think I was crazy. Playing with the idea of using prerendered stories for my 2D MMO. There's currently no animation, and this seems to be the only practical way to do it (since your gear is shown on your character). That means rapidly learning enough about 3D modelling/animation.

And even then, it's not clear that it'll be practical:
16 frames ร— 32-bit bitmap ร— 10 animations ร— 108ร—108 pixels ร— 8 directions = 57MB of sprites in memory per on-screen character.

You're 10 years too late, silly goose.
Game Maker has been dead for a while.
The thing is that YoYo Games kept erasing previous versions and everything associated with them, so people would be forced to buy latest, more expensive versions.
When they moved to subscription model in 2021, everyone just fucked off.
In 2022 they rebranded from "Studio 2" to just "GameMaker" and wiped Studio 2 associated content eventually closing down Marketplace in 2024.
The Marketplace, where you could get various projects and extensions is still down a year later; userbase is decimated; tutorials made from previous versions are outdated and incompatible with current GM.
It's over.
The games that you still see coming out on it are from people who got sucked into it years ago and been stuck making them for years.
Do yourself a favor and move on to Godot or Unity instead.

i was like that until i got this job. now im kinda obligated to show up. i still miss some days out of exhaustion, but there are several trains of thought helping this out.
1. be kind to yourself
youre not gonna suddenly become some extremely motivated hyper-efficient developer. give yourself some time to build something up no matter how small. a consistent sleep schedule, a nice exercise routine? some fun food you could cook (this is amazing btw. cooking is fucking therapeutic.), and just allocate 10 mins a day to studying or reading.

I disagree with the other guy, in that you need motivation to do this. You can just do it because it sounds like fun. You don't need a good reason to do anything in life IMO, it can just be fun to do it.

Yeah, just do whatever sounds fun. Keep in mind that most language-specific courses are going to have you doing a bunch of shit that you'll never use in gamedev, you're better off looking for an engine-specific 101 course then download some demo/sample projects to look through and see how they handle basic mechanical implementation and you're basically good to rumble, make some stuff, join some jams, live a more fun life than 99% of neets automatically.

Or maybe you'll find that it's the language that's more interesting and you'll end up doing softwaredev tournies or hackathons or whatever.

I think the rig would need to be something that supports that sort of scaling to work properly.

Right now, I'm making the trailer for my game, all done within the Unity engine.

It's pretty annoying because I cannot use Unity's built-in animation or timeline due to the fact that I wrote my own URP which cannot be controlled via the animation window or timeline, and most of the trailer utilizes the post processing and FX I created.

Game is an exploring game, I've shared it here before. Not today, however. Too busy, sorry fellas.

you aren't doing it right, anono. you look like you are freezing or reducing fps. You need to set up a stepped timer and then create fake keyframes in your constructor.
other wise it looks choppy like on your webm.

also, for a stop motion, you need to be careful with the animations because the way in which stop motion film is animated is much, much different than 2D or 3D animations.

**as in, the movement is handle different.

If you want a real stop motion look you need to also create the animation. You cannot get it look good with mixamo anims or whatever because the way that they are move is not how stop motion or clay mation will look.

further you need to also step everything else at the same rate, otherwise the player will notice inconsistent. See your particles? Your waterfall? too fast.
but, do you know even how to create a stepped time function for those? Ask yourself that first before you proceed on the rig anims.

agree, that worries me. Would need to keep the animation the same length of the current one, maybe 1 or 2 frames more at most, it wouldn't feel very good. Another option would be to have 2 shield bashes, a normal one by pressing the button, and a more powerful one that's done when holding down the button. Might be cool since I have normal and heavy enemies, and the charged shield bash could throw away even heavy enemies. But yeah I still have to try and decide on that.

Also Verlet Integration is good for ropes, but that a different can of worms, I think.

The guy who animated Destiny for Bungie had a pretty good rule for his melee animation that I follow to this day since that game is hailed to this day for having satisfying and impactful first person gameplay. Your game is third person, so YMMV
>doesn't start from idle, idle would be something like -2 rather than 1 in the keyframes
>frame 3 is the 'anticipation pose', the part where your character has primed his muscles for the melee swing
>frame 5 is the 'hit pose', this is the exact frame where your melee connects with the enemy
>rest of the animation is winding down/recovering and may be a longer animation up to 30 frames even, how long you want it becomes a question of game design
And his previous standard in Halo games was that frame 3 was always the 'hit pose'.
Of course it's strange to bring up exact keyframes because none of this stuff is universal, but I think Destiny/Halo melee was always an impactful and satisfying "I'm gonna need you to piss off right now" move.
Your second option reminds me of Smash Bros, you could charge side special/smash attacks in that game for extra impact and they always had great effects to go along with them.

Depends but I really liked what Wakfu did with theirs.
>four elements, fire/water/earth/wind
>each class has access to spells from 3 of them
>each fills a different niche - fire does damage over time and buffs, earth does damage reductions and steals movement points, etc
>you can build around 1 element to do 100% possible DPT, 2 for roughly 90% of that, or 3 for 80%, sacrificing raw damage for versatility and easier time against resistant enemies
>companion NPCs were either one or two element, with only a few skills compared to player characters, but their skills changed effects depending on what their highest element powers were (pic rel as example)
>companions could change their dominant element with skills during combat, dual element ones would swap their two main elements, solo element could change what their secondary is
