Wonder blew me away. Not quite as good as Nostalgia carried Mario 3 but darn close. The first one was also pretty fun multiplayer, nothing special on its own though.

Wonder is SOVL to the extreme, and probably the only Mario platformer of the entire franchise that feels like they wanted to do something a little "extra" rather than just making the same game and slapping another NEW in the title or making another generic platformer but with one new powerup.
"Doing something different" can be a good thing or a bad thing, though, depending on who you ask, and I'm still salty that Yoshi's the game's babymode character.

The 5 nsmb games are all the same but they're at least consistent brainless 2d fun. They don't jam in needless one off gimmicks in EVERY single level, they don't have a horrible talking flower spouting marvel quips at you the whole game, they don't have afghani's TERRIBLE performance as mario/luigi, they don't have borderline useless powerups (bubble, drill helmet, elephant), and the bosses (despite being dreadfully easy) are still a thousand fold more thought out than anything in wonder. I'd go as far to say it's the only game you should actively AVOID unless you're extremely curious and starving for another mario game (seriously dude look anywhere else).

I have never played any Mario games newer than Yoshi's Island. To this day I keep replaying 1/4th of SMW1 before putting it away. It's fun, but not fun enough to keep me engaged.

Wonder was great and the only reason it was "forgotten" is because people just don't really want 2D mario games anymore. That isn't to say theres nothing to do with them anymore, but the last true new 2D mario was just new super mario bros ds (which sold well because it was an early DS game and the DS itself was exciting).

Wii only sold well cuz co-op. After New Super Mario Bros Wii, normies just have no excitement for 2D mario. Which is fine, if Nintendo ever does some revolutionary new console again like the Wii or DS they can easily get people hyped for a new 2D mario early launching on it that way, but until then it's just a backseat field to the 3D games. I enjoy the New SMB games but its not like they were so popular 100% on their own merits lol Wonder tried selling 100% on its own merits and the response was okay but not standard.

I don't get why all studios fight so hard to resist 3d platformers, when they often win GOTY like Mario Galaxy, Odyssey, and Astrobot.
Indy team knocks it out of the park with a hat in time, never follows up a decade latter. Banjo Kazooie is still raved about today, no real sequel to the original style.

Wonder was “forgotten” because the game has anti-replayability, it relies way too much on the wonder-effect gimmick that when you replay a level, it feels like a slog to play, plus the game is easy as hell despite having thr advantage of the badge system which makes the game easier or gives you joke-effects. The older NSMB games especially U have a lot more challenging and interesting level design compared to Wonder. NSMBU has tons of replayability and it has a great challenge mode.

Absolutely disagree on the difficult though. Once you get it its easy but that first run was the hardest Mario since Mario 2. That is not saying much but I really liked it in this 84 IQ TotK puzzle age. The 5 star levels definitely challenged me at first.
