Was it just me or was this year Evo extremely underwhelming?

Most matches were just borderline ok or just plain boring and the announcements weren't that great either.

The fighting game genre is in the process of the final stages of its death, only legacy games are still keeping it running on fumes, and even those are starting to fade out. Tekken has maybe one more game in the series before it's done and buried, which will leave SF as the sole remaining fighting game with actual players over the next 10-15 years, and once it finally dies once the Japanese can no longer sustain it, the genre will finally perish once and for all.

The Tekken tournament was depressing to watch, I feel indifference from whatever new characters get revealed due to how the game is too.
No new Tokon character announcement is odd, and maybe concerning, base roster may be a lot smaller than what everyone is expecting
VF looked interesting but we're not getting that game until at least 2027 so it's hard to care right now
I don't care about Cyberpunk but Lucy at least animates interestingly I guess. Strive 2.0 is maybe interesting.
Granblue getting EX characters is interesting.

Tekken was rough because it was just watching Anna tear a hole through the game. You had an Anna on winners and then an Anna on losers meet up in grand finals. And Arslan's Anna fucking sucks to watch to boot. His Nina is mildly more entertaining but by that point I was so checked out.
All my favorite players got eliminated even before top 24.

The current selection of games is optimized to put any viewer to sleep, it's sad how we didn't even get to have a hayao-like moment this year because magneto vs magneto was the nostalgia pick.

SF3 and Punk redemption made last year hype. This had nothing going for it

I only watched SoulCalibur VI and I was still disappointed. GF were the same people playing the same matchup with the same result as CEO earlier this year. Last year's grand finals were Zasalamel vs. Ivy. It was a very close set and very exciting to watch. Nowadays Incendiate never uses her, always picks Xianghua or Geralt. Geralt is the most boring character in the game and grand finals were 2B vs Geralt. They didn't even include a single SoulCalibur character.

You know what would make Evo better? If they actually broadcast the top 8 players at the very start of pools where they get matched up with absolute scrubs who had zero chance of making it out of pools. Just make it one bit humiliation ritual.

I think the only reason I watch Tekken 8 is out of habit, because I enjoyed watching Tekken 7. My memory of 7 is visually impressive gameplay where both players are dancing in and out of each other's range with dashes and sidesteps before engaging. Tekken 8 just looks like two fucking gorillas taking turns mashing buttons in the other gorilla's face. It's ugly, it's inelegant, and it's completely incomprehensible as a spectator. Every button looks safe until it suddenly isn't and one player is getting carried to the wall for 10 seconds and 60% of their HP. AFTER the HP buff.

It's crazy how Tekken 8 feels like it has less neutral than fucking SF6, a game with a dedicated neutral skip mechanic.

Caught everything except MK and Strive, the top 8's that I did watch were pretty good except for Tekken and SF6 grands so it was fine. Announcements were whatever, Granblue getting EX characters and UNI2 getting more characters in general were already good enough for me and VF6 looked solid. I don't think Strive needs 2.0 nor doo I think a 2.0 could "fix" the game but if it does then I might go back for Jam. Don't give a single shit for tag fighters tho so the 3 upcoming tag fighters are giga sleep to me.

I liked it, but too much corporate shilling. I only watch SF during EVO and don't know much about the scene now for top players. Its okay for a top 8, but I don't really like the UI very much. EVO is much better if you just watch the top 8s after they upload them to their youtube. There are no ads or commentary before the match. Its just match into the next match.

This latest batch of games seems pretty good to me, but I don't have that much time to play games anymore, its hard to justify buying new games.

I liked watching CoTW and BlazBlue. KI was pretty good, UNI is not that bad either. Strive is not really my jam, but I hear its more fun to play. Marvel 2 is not as fun to watch as Marvel 3 in my opinion. I try, but I like watching x-factor bullshit too much. VF is good too, better than Tekken, but does get dry after a while.

I wish there were still good weeklies instead of online tournaments. I skip most majors and online tournaments, so I don't know who the players are at this point. Most of the online weeklies I watch are for niche/small community games.

It's because it's a relatively small, niche game in a niche sub-genre of a niche genre. Traditional fighting game players call it a party game, only to get their assholes gaped by gold players on ranked and uninstall - if they install it all. Smash players simply won't play or discuss platform fighters that aren't Smash, whether it's Ultimate or Melee, with the exception being PM players. It isn't Melee, so Melee players dislike it. And 4 and Ultimate are so far removed from Melee and even Brawl that it's difficult to discuss how hard people who play them get filtered by other games.

A competitively-oriented platform fighter that's essentially still in early access in terms of singleplayer content only appeals to dedicated players, which is why the playerbase is what it is. There's only a few thousand people who actively play RoA2, but most of them really like and advocate for the game because it appeals to them and the developers are very pro-consumer and pro-player.

This is just my perspective.

it's been increasingly corporate and sterile for years now. I only watched top 8s on Sunday and those took forever due to them having to take excessively long breaks between matches to run all their chipotle and red bull commercials and then let the advertising screen saver play on stream for another 5 minutes before finally doing the next match and starting the whole advertisement process over again. team spooky stream days were peak and it will only be great again if it becomes unprofitable and the sponsors pull out to let tournaments once again be community run.
