I'm playing this game for the first time right now. I'm having fun, but it's really striking that this game feels very mis-marketed. V is mostly a very preset character. He's a lot closer to the type of protagonist that Geralt is rather than a typical WRPG create-a-character, like the Baldur's Gate 3 protagonist. You have some choices but frequently the options all make sense in the context of who V is as you meet him in act 1. Your background is shown on all your saves but it doesn't seem to affect anything but an occasional optional dialog choice.
The RPG mechanics of the game is really more about what method of violence you use.

The game has a way of wasting your time. Character dialogue can often times go nowhere and give you little information. They sometimes talk as though they're being cryptic, but really they're just trying not to reveal there's no jnformation about certain things.

When Johny first tells you to go to Mikoshi, for example, it could be a two-sentence conversation.

"We should go to a place called Mikoshi. They studied soulkillers there."

Instead I can't recall what all V and Johnny talk about, but it's meandering. It's REALLY easy to start zoning out and miss key details because characters talk about nothing a lot. Also there are a few blink-and-you-miss characters who matter once and never again.

Playing up the archetype of a cocky bad boy with a devil-may-care attitude is actually pretty easy, since being over the top and edgy only serves to enhance the portrayal.
You can absolutely tell that he was having a blast and wearing a shit eating grin while recording some of Johnny's more crass quips and banters.
Conversely, when the mask falls off during more dramatic or sincere dialogue or comments, it only exemplifies that Keanu struggles with displaying emotional depth and letting the weight of the character's weakness come through in his voice.

I think Keanu did a pretty decent run with Johnny, but I doubt many would argue that star power had a bigger part to play in his casting than actual skill. There are definitely other VAs who could have done a much better job.

Personal take on the game: you're not playing things as they enfold, you're playing the archived engram memories of V, probably edited a bit to make things a lot more heroic. Like Silverhand, you're stuck on repeat, relieving reconstructed variations of the events forever, but whoever made the engram in the end was sympathetic enough toward V to grant some respite.
Would explain a lot of things, among which the messages when you try to leave Night City.

Oh Silverhand as a character absolutely fits that bill. An iceberg of bravado and overconfidence that conceals a massive depth of insecurity beneath the surface, with the added burden as a psyche of a man brought back to 'consciousness' and being forced into the knowledge that he died like a bitch riding the coattails of real warriors, spit in the face of basically everyone who ever gave him their trust, saved nobody, had his corpse desecrated and his brain catalogued like a rolodex by the very entity he gave his life fighting, and his legacy was to be tossed in a trash heap for the vultures and forgotten as little more than a fairytale hero for mercs and a terrorist that took up no more than two sentences of text in the book of Arasaka's dynasty.

But Keanu doesn't show that struggle of a man unwilling to admit to that. His struggle is in showing that struggle in the first place. His cadence and tone just feel... off to me. When you sit with Johnny in the aforementioned trash heap and he finally starts to show some genuine emotion and willingness to change, I spent the next few hours of questing waiting for the other boot to drop because it just came across like all the other times that Johnny hit us with the "ayy relax guy I've got your back" before once again proving he's a self-centered piece of shit.

I do agree with your last statement; I feel like he has only been improving with age. I know he isn't one to turn his nose up at a lot of roles (fucking Shadow the Hedgehog?), but I genuinely would like to see Keanu get some roles, film or otherwise, that allow him to flex a bit outside of what he is known for and see what new heights he could reach.

Alt simply pointed out the truth that memories are an extremely unreliable source of truth and V had just never stopped to consider that.
