Why are Zelda fans like this?

I really do wonder what they're going to do to fill the 90-120 minutes of this movie.
Mario was already an absolutely barebones plot that just filled its time with more or less random, barely connected setpieces that just featured a bunch of Mario references, but Mario gets away with that because it's a franchise inherently whimsical and playful and abstract.
That's not really the case with Zelda, even with something like Wind Waker you have a fundamentally serious game. But if you can't cram random shit into the movie, what the hell are you going to put into it? Character drama? Not much to work with there. Some Indiana Jones types adventure with action setpieces? Maybe, but again I find it hard to imagine Link carrying such a plot alone. I guess they can pair him up with Zelda right away, but still, I'm very curious.
It's gonna be so bad.

The theology of the LOTR trilogy and the theology of legend of zelda couldn't be more different. Tolkiens books are based on Christian presuppositions about reality. Zelda is based on Shintoist/Buddhist preconceptions.

Two seconds in Google says the LOTR trilogy grossed 3 billion (no idea if that's accounting for inflation). The Mario movie, which did really fucking well, only grossed half that. LOZ is a lesser known property and if it's live action, there's a much higher chance kids won't see it.

Zelda has the aesthetics of a european medieval fantasy world, but it's theology and spirit are all japanese.
For one the core theology of the story is that the hero, his lover, and their villain are all trapped in an eternal unbreakable cycle of reincarnation where they are doomed to fight for the fate of the world for all eternity.

I have to agree, I don't care for the Mario movie, the tech is there, the movie looks great but the tone is just not good, then again Mario is such an amorphous property that the script was always going to be a tossup.
Zelda, Metroid, Kirby, Xenoblade and so on tend to have more defined concepts, so the Zelda movie will be a litmus test on whether Nintendo can stick true to that or the NCU is doomed.
