The problem with OSRS is that the subscription model is intentionally manipulative.

It's already bad in how they use small crumbs of actual content in order to bait people into the skinner boxes that gate them, especially since it's undeniable that the tedium is intentionally designed to make people waste more subscription days by getting tired of it, but as bad as that is, that's not the manipulative part.

The manipulative part is the fact that the F2P world is intentionally designed to be even worse in EVERY regard. It's not just that you don't get content that isn't available in the paid version, which would be understandable: it's instead the fact that doing the same activities are just infinitely less rewarding on a F2P world than doing them in a P2P area, sometimes in real subtle ways too.

This is all done to make subscribing to play more attractive, as you're not just cordoned off when you're a F2P, your entire experience even just walking around is just markedly worse. This gap is enough to trick people to do the equivalent of paying money to watch red glitter paint dry, all because they got bored of watching lifeless gray paint dry instead.

F2P is so sabotaged that it's not even a real way to play that can be considered just "worse" than P2P. F2P is just an aggressive and manipulative advertisement for P2P at every turn. F2p is more or less the game as it was prior to the existence of membership, with the addition of a couple of quests, minigames, bosses, and areas
I can agree that it should have more content to it (give f2p fletching at least) but the only "manipulative advertisement" is a banner ad in your chat box if you click on a members activity. Otherwise you're just given a restricted area you can play in but no limitation on how long you can play.
Frankly, I'll take that over f2p trials I experienced as a kid where you could only play for 2 weeks or whatever, or games throwing actual ads for in game microtransactions

I genuinely feel like OSRS is in a very healthy state with a huge amount of content, and I think it's good that content from literally 20 years ago is still relevant and not superseded by shiny new things. I don't think they should expand the map more (yet), I don't think they should they add worthless item rewards, or just so many XP drops you never grind funneling players into a quest->endgame filter.

The one flaw this game has right now is that it caters to 99 autism.
Skilling is done exclusively to get experience (or uniques). You no longer skill to get items, because bosses drop those items in higher quantities than you could ever gather them. If you need any item, you can gather/craft it, or you can kill a boss and get it, and a dozen other things.
The only reason to do that is to grind exp. That's why skilling is boring and why they keep making minigames because skilling is boring.

There is a very easy fix to this, bit they can't do it because community is autistic about XP rates and metas getting upset. If Fletching gets turned fro 50 hour to 45 hour skill, their account is ruined because muh EHP.

I bought a bond for a million gold the day they released. Made the money fishing lobsters. I rushed Swan Song and fished up enough monkfish for another. I've been sustaining myself ever since. Whenever I mention this, some efficiency goblin always crawls out to criticize how I play, trying to explain to me how much account progression I could make if I didn't have that constant drain on my resources. The thing is, that's only true in a vacuum. I know that if I wasn't standing on a treadmill at all times, I'd have no motivation to move forward. If I just payed for a sub, I'd open my bank for an hour, then log out. Every day.

I also am not a fan of bossing or slayer. So my money all comes from skilling. Suck constantly competing against gold farmers and literal robots. That can be part of it. But it can be nice side activity when you are indeed catching up on other stuff. In the end most MMOs are that more or less unless you are doing something you focus on bit more. That's also one of the best parts of OSRS.
Yeah you can train smithing by doing cannonballs which is one of the most afk things ever with some money making as a plus, or getting ammo for Dwarf Cannon. Or you can do Giant's Foundry which is bit more click intensive and needs you to pay some attention. Or you can do Blast Furnace with gold ore.
Same with grinding melee stats, afk at sands/ammonite crabs or the new giant crab boss, or do some stuff where you get proper drops, along with slayer by focusing a bit more. Raids etc. are another thing obviously which needs you to focus.

Because it is kind of boring, but I think you are thinking about gaming in more of a "worth of your time" aspect and not just playing because you enjoy it. You can enjoy something simple when it comes to gameplay. Hell, I enjoy JRPGs, but also play Super Smash Bros. Melee competitively(even when I s u c k). You should realize that other people might find stuff you don't care about enjoyable. Because other people might think same about your favorite game or genre. Hell some people think vidya is waste of time.
