I do think that Nintendo attempted to "clean up" Mario's image around the time of the Wii because he was all over the place during the GCN. That being said, after the Wii U shit the bed, Nintendo started being more experimental again. It's easier to keep a conservative, squeaky clean image when you are riding high on sales success.

It's been theorized by fan's that Miyamoto was responsible for this, but I'm not sure about that. Mario was plenty weird and experimental when he was still at the height of the creative team.
