You have to commit to a monotype, keep multiple teams on hand for trainers of various skill levels, and balance giving your kid challengers a fair shot without steamrolling them. You only have a limited amount of time to catch your own Pokemon because you can't leave the gym unattended.

3D Platformer with many different mons (obviously not the entire roster), where with enough experience you level up to evolve and get more abilities (duh)

With Nidoking you could destroy the terrain for secret passages, with Altaria you could fly. Stuff like that. Also each mon has an unique storyline for itself before eventually you get the Free Roam mode to change between mons in other areas.

Pokemon should've been the trailblazer for the open world genre, but now making the perfect Pokemon game will just end up feeling derivative.

battles should be more like a RTS. you give your pokemon a command and then it tries to do that command in realtime, with the success or failure of the command being related to how well you've trained it.

Or barring that go full tilt with what the legends games were trying to do and just make the games into action RPGs where you control the mons directly and run around the battlefield performing special attacks. Medieval euro pokemon, starter is a mount, bunch of knight and bladed weapon pokeys and shit

Gyms are a mix of tournament - jousting matches and are treated as this big thing with a whole carnival. Later on the whole plot shifts into a holy crusade.
