decisionmaking with actual tradeoffs between movement and offense.

if you wanna run away and make some space you can't shoot em, if you wanna shoot em you can't run away. it means you're actually making decisions about what you should be doing at every given moment isntead of just doing the obvious thing

More room for error?

Without strafing, you need to actually think outside of the box, like for example using the mine gloves in blackwater city?

Also having only 4 hitpoints makes the combat better, I guess.

Why does Size Matters have the best armor system in the series?

>the Agents of Doom got a gold upgrade and the Walloper didn't
Huge mistake, the agents suck, even when they're upgraded they're like if the sandmice were total dogshit, the gold walloper would've oneshot the mutants on Orxon.

Why are you trying to foment this retarded us vs them combat? The only game out of the original 4 that doesn't have some particular merit to its combat is UYA and, apart from health bloat and underanimation on some late game enemies, it's still a fun system.

Weapons were treated like situational power-ups, with level design that encourages
As the games move more towards being TPSs, they moved away from designing levels around specific weapons; the level up system also flattened weapon and enemy encounter design diversity

Quick Select didn't pause time. You either
>paused the game
>went to the weapons menu
>then selected the weapon you wanted
or use it as intended and map the 4 weapons you will immediately use to up/down/left/right for seamless gameplay.

It also helps that strafing wasn't a thing. Convenient, but boring.

The combat actually requires thinking and resource management with ammo and money unlike later games where you just run around like headless chicken with the strongest weapon in your arsenal
Anonymous No.717391413 [Report] >>717393917
>>717376616 (OP)
I don't think it did. A lot of the weapons are cumbersome to use, but at least it's not piss easy and pointlessly gratifying in how trivial it is. That's worth something. The level design was probably the best in the series, too. I hated how the Movie tie in gutted most of the levels and changed a bunch of shit.

It doesn't. Enemies just run straight at you until you're in range of their attacks then stand in place and attack until you're out of range or one of you is dead. The same goes for the player for that matter.
>muh tactics
Most weapons work fine in most situations. The sequels had their problems but they felt a lot better to play
Anonymous No.717394742 [Report] >>717408235
It's more of a "what are you looking for" kinda situation.
If you want a platformer with guns, you go 1.
If you want a shooter with platforming, you go Deadlocked.
If you want a mix of both at the cost of not doing each perfectly, you go GC.
UYA leans more to deadlocked than 1.

>you're actually making decisions
Side step the first shot then do whatever you want while they continue firing at where you were when they drew their weapon. The game is incredibly brainless once you see through the NPC behaviors

I'm not denying that. Having worse combat that's more enjoyable to engage with because of its quirks is a good thing. But it doesn't mean that's objectively the best implementation. Merit isn't always determined on objective qualities.

If it's more enjoyable to engage with, then it's not worse combat.
Anonymous No.717397948 [Report]
>>717397770
If you could have the same mechanics and interactions, but not have to fight to aim properly, or hold the controller a weird way to use it optimally, it would objectively be better. The fun that comes out of something being a little clunky doesn't mean it's not clunky at all. Just that it's not always the end of the world to leave a few rough patches.

Sideflips maintain forward momentum and backflips let you back up without having to turn around, the midair dash from the thrusterpack can be performed after either of them as well as after a double jump.
>>717400024
Do not use the thrusterpack's strafing, it does not work, moving without ice physics and jumping are way too valuable to deprioritize.
Anonymous No.717401770 [Report]
i wouldnt blame strafing for this
enemies are designed so you can beat them however you want, any form is effective, they are designed as if you only had access to one weapon
doesn't help that most weapons are just dps but with different hitboxes

If that isn't the shittiest take I've ever seen.
>GC>R&C>DL>UYA>CiT>ToD>ItN
GC was the best game by far. If they hadn't rushed it it'd probably be flawless. It had ship battles, multiple paths, lots of guns, old guns, racing, multiple hacking tools, multiple clank upgrades, collecathons, and pay walls. Yes, pay walls were good because they filtered you if you spent everything all the time. It was much better than UYA where you can blast through everything and its linear as fuck from there on out with easier gameplay, when it wasn't really hard to begin with. I love all the games, but they definitely peaked with GC.

Don't get me wrong, I'm saying that is is really fucking good at what it does in all of its' elements, I'm just saying 1 did the platforming better and Deadlocked did the shooting, however, the sum of the parts makes GC my favourite experience as well.
