the OG creator of Disco Elysium getting me-too'd and the IP being given to a soulless corporation is the most karmic thing I've seen happen in video games.

It has so many layers. One of the first people you encounter is the stupid racist who is meant to be unappealing in every way possible from being fat to rude, only for you to encounter >>717382851 who is also racist but is also literally correct about everything and who works out. At the end of the day however you can get past most peoples exterior to learn that they are just using politics to try and fix the hurting they have inside, either from hurt pride from having their country be dominated and pillaged from an outside force to being abused by their father. Or they are just using politics to control useful idiots to gain more power or to blend in for other motives. The game is about politics but not really.

Every video game with good writing is ripping off a actual movie with good writing.
Remember how LA Noire has good writing?
That's because it ripped off LA Confidential.
Remember how The Last of Us (ps3) has good writing? That's because it ripped off 28 days later.
Disco Elysium is a detective game that rips off True Detective, arguably the best detective "movie" ever made.

But Disco Elysium is not even an actual detective game. Most of what makes the writing good is the world building and that was established before True Detective.

True Detective isn't an actual detective movie.
Its main focus is on the relationship between the two cops over the course of their investigation, with the actual murder mystery getting wrapped up in the last episode and a half.
Sound familiar?

You're a detective that's barely on the other side of a complete mental breakdown, you drank yourself to the point of Ego Death.
You're in a city that used to be the center of the world, reduced to a corpse of it's former glory, and you have to investigate the vermin and parasites living in it to solve a murder case.
Part of the gimmick is that you're a variable amount of schizophrenic, you have voices that embody ideals in your head that narrate and comment on everything.
If you cheat a little and max out everything(which isn't necessarily a good thing), when you step outside the hotel for the first time you'll be treated to about 30 minutes of rambling descriptions on the world around you.

The world where you don't intentionally ditch Kim during the investigation. But even then that breaks the game and sometimes Kim's dialogue plays during conversations even though he's not "there."

Kim is a supporting character while Harry is firmly the lead. Harry's personal issues are the plot, Kim barely gets explored and he's mostly there as a moral compass. True Detective puts its two protagonists pretty much in equal standing.

I wish I could play it for the first time again blind because I schizo'd myself hard and it was so fun.
>really high inland empire
>tons of dialogue talking about ghosts
>thought the hanged man was Harry and he killed himself, and I was a ghost or in a ghost world, or I could talk to ghosts like the hanged man
>the fucking phone booth sounds exactly like talking to ghosts and the way Harry's ex talks I thought she was hearing a ghost
>apocalypse cop talking about some big impending doom, which I thought was Harry realizing he was dead or something like that
>learn about the pale and think it's swallowing up reality and I'm in some weird schizo mismatched world where things aren't how they should be
I had a slow wake up call just like Harry realizing the game world was actually real and that I was really just a detective on a case that had to get on with his life.
