Turn-based games (typically older games, or new games based on old concepts) originated as a computerized version of D&D and other tabletop games which involve a lot of number crunching and were mostly only appealing to nerds back in the day. Normies aren't thinkers, they're doers, so action-based games are more appealing to them. Normies do actually play turn-based or other non-action games, but largely only on mobile devices, of which the games on those platforms are essentially worse versions of the games they draw inspiration from, but with extra features and design principles to addict the user and get them to spend money on microtransactions. I used to like action games more when I was younger, but I spent a lot of my teenage years playing mobile games, and those were what got me into playing older games that were actually designed to be fun.

they don't hate it. pokemon and persona a often among normies favourites. the problem is that 4 niggas in a row games usually have awful balance, early game requiring nothing more than using the "attack" command and then there being a random difficulty spike anywhere from the 30%-70% completion point that the player was not prepared for that makes a certain encounter feel impassable.

to really get normies in, you need good aesthetics above all else. that and characters/a story that are/is relatable to a wide array of people (but mostly teens and young adults).

Not a normie but I almost exclusively play turn-based games. They suit my playstyle, which is strategy over twitch reflexes. Probably because my upper limit for reflexes basically ends at "decent at action games," whereas I'm very good at games of strategy. I was a chess club nerd like Todd Howard too actually.

Persona isn't very strategic especially compared to SMT but I thought the image was cute.

It really is. It's 100% parry (or dodging if you're casual) based. I have shit reflexes and got by just fine by memorizing attack patterns. After beating the game, I used a trainer to mess around with all the character's stats, and was genuinely shocked how little the core character building matters at all. It's basically not an RPG. If there's such thing as a turn-based action game, that's basically what E33 is.
