Mutant League Football actually got a successor game a while back: Mutant Football League. It even managed to get a sequel.
It also did a lot to highlight why a lot of fantasy sports games don't get made: it's hard to actually appeal to people with them. The average gamer just thinks "well it's sports, and sports aren't my thing," so they won't touch it no matter how much it leans into fantasy or arcadey mechanics, and sports fans won't touch it because they'd prefer to play the games that actually have the real teams and players. When I took MFL to hangouts to play couch vidya, and people just instantly turned their noses up once they saw that the game actually had Plays n' shit.
It only works if the sport is exceedingly simple, if there's a fun character attached, or the sport is an entirely new riff on things, and even then, success can be limited. Just look at how the number of people that even know that Roller Champions exists can be counted on one hand. Not everyone can be Mario Tennis or Rocket League
