Why does the PS5 have a disc tray?
90% of my library is digital and most of my friends are 100% digital, saying the boxes just clutter up their apartment.
As far as I can see the only argument is bying used games, but if you don't mind waiting a price drop on used games, why not just wait for a sale from the publisher? The PS store has sales all the time, good ones too, often on AAA stuff.

So I ask you, what's the point?

Because I get a double discount. If I buy a used game at 20% off, and then resell it when I'm done, and make 20% back I have effectively saved 40% on literally every game I buy. It doesn't matter how good sales on digital are when I can get any game I want, 40% off.

>the ability to sell a game you no longer want
>being able to borrow a game with ease
>being able to lend a game out with ease
Also, in my case:
>being a collector and having stuff you enjoy lining your shelves
But hey, enjoy your rental which can be taken away at any time.
Additionally:
>some physical games costing half the digital price; Returnal and Demon's Souls remake come to mind, even cheaper than when they digitally go on sale.

>90% of my library is digital and most of my friends are 100% digital
Who cares about your anecdotes? The Insomniac leak outright showed that most Sony first-party titles are bought primarily physically, sometimes upwards of 70/30 physical to digital and that's data as recent as 2023. Shuhei, the former CEO, outright stated that a huge chunk of people live on farms or away from internet connections that aren't satellite making it unfeasible for them to even play games digitally let alone download patches.
>The PS store has sales all the time, good ones too, often on AAA stuff.
It takes months longer if not years longer for certain games to reach even half of what physical dropped to within four to six months and that's only specifically talking about brand new unopened copies. If you go used the games are already cheaper day one by $10. Sekiro is a great example of something that was $40 physically within 6 or so months.

In addition to this you are at the mercy of the developers keeping up with their licensing and payments to purchase that game in the first place. Want to play the Platinum Games' licensed games like Transformers or Korra?
https://store.playstation.com/en-us/search/transformers
https://store.playstation.com/en-us/search/korra
Oh well, sucks to be you.

Furthermore you are forced into downloading the latest version with digital whereas physical can play stuff unpatched if they feel like it, or offline with no download if they feel like it. Judge Eyes' original Hamura is only possible with launch versions of the Japanese copy. Don't have a hacked PS4 and want to play with it legitimately as a Japanese person on your PS5? Well it's not possible unless you buy that copy and play offline. Want the original unmodified Stellar Blade outfits? Can't get that anywhere but the physical copies.

This isn't even getting into ownership or you losing your entire account over banking issues or false reports from sore losers.

I didn't even realize that my PC has no disk reader until four years after I got it

I buy physical for most games on console. That's part of the appeal for me. A physical item on the shelf. I already have a PC and that is all digital.

Better question is, why does it have a disc tray when it has no games?

I buy physical but it's more of a habit, I can't really defend it. If the PS5 servers close I'd rather just have no game rather than the unfinished code they ship with that need patches.

I'm aware all of you never connect your Playstation online and never ran into a bug and stop being low iq check doesitplay.org etc. but I just don't care.

But considering the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still up I'd say we have awhile yet.

Sounds like a personal problem, every single one of my >>717389492 PS4 games contain fully playable software on the disc even without the day 1 patch. I never understood the whole "game isn't even on the disc lol" mentality.

I pirate every game on my pc. I buy phisycal editions of exclusive games of my ps5 or games I really love, because digital it's not owning, you fuckin retard zoomers.
For example I was excited for Mafia but no physical edition means a no buy. I'll wait if they crack Denuvo.

Physical is ownership. Simple as.
Companies are pushing digital-only because they don't want you to own what you buy.

Not all media gets rereleased when new tech comes out or higher fidelity becomes the standard.
Many "remasters" actually look demonstrably worse than the original release.
Even if it does look better, DVDs had shitloads of extra content and features which more often than not never came back on BD releases.

>Buy game for $70
>Play it
>Sell it for $50
Can't do that on digital
>Buy game on sale for $30
>Play it
>Sell it for $20
Can't do that on digital

Also, what happens when PS6 comes around? Backwards compatibility means that you have to hope they upgrade your game or you're just playing a gimped 30 or whatever game on a powerful console.

The finished game isn't on the disc. It is known games are still worked on after "going gold".

In 20+ years we will see, I guess.

"Physical Gamers" are just stalking Limited Run, Super Rare, Strictly Limited, etc to pay $100 for games that are $15 downloads.

Yes, and that's the day-one patch.
In most cases, the game that's on the disc is fully-functional.

You can use https://www.doesitplay.org/ to see if your game requires any downloads to run.

It's typically $10 on top of the digital MSRP. Paying any more than that is ridiculous and usually constitutes being an absurd spender who buys CEs and only CEs.

I am the anon you're responding to and the last Limited Jew game I bought was Freedom Planet. I don't "invest," if I have a game that shoots up in price then I simply have a game that shoots up in price, and if I'm ever in a jam, I have several games I could sell for $300-400. ($700 if counting a complete Steel Battalion set) I do not buy games to turn around and resell, that's mad gay.
