What about the gamecube one? Eternal Darkness or something, I've never played it. I've heard it's good.

hard to write a good plot where you're mired in actual lovecraftian horror and survive for a long time

The better question is why do most Lovecraft games just go:
>ooooo tentacles insanity!

Eternal Darkness on the Gamecube was pretty good too.

Dead Space is a really good game but I don't count it as Lovecraftian.
It has aliens, it has horror, but it is not the same "cosmic horror" that Lovecraft invented and employed. It's close to Ridley Scott's works like the Alien franchise.

Alien is also inspired by Lovecraft.

How is dead space lovecraftian? They are literaelly just zombies.

The term "Lovecraftian" has transformed to now just mean "scary things that aren't explained."
