The lore is complicated enough I think. Keeping the player on a tight leash where they are always more of a mythical, unknown factor that pushes the wheel of destiny is a smarter choice in the long run.
The very last thing this series would ever need is "those" guys screeching about their past choices in a save from 8 years ago and how they expelled everyone and where's MY alternate timeline choices and blhblhablhblhblaahb. Just, could we not go down that route. We've seen it play out over and over again. It stifles everything when devs try it and everyone gets to be mad when they eventually abandon it. Makes things so messy. Let's just not do that.
