I got like 90% through the game and just dropped it. Zero motivation to keep going through the same repetitive motion chasing red herring dead ends for zero payoff aside from my ship log updating.

Got to the sun station (which I probably reached way later than the average player) thinking SURELY that was the missing link that I had skipped over that would make everything connect... but nope.... just another completely pointless dead end that does nothing except give a bit of flavor text and a ship log update.

What a miserable, tedious, repetitive, obnoxious game.

I know this retard is a lost cause, but he does unwittingly illustrate a heuristic for whether or not someone will like OW. The delineation is whether the player views the exploration itself as its own reward or is laser focused on completing a checklist. It's the difference between someone who plays a platformer and tries to get on some out of bounds geometry just for the hell of it because it looks possible and someone who just routes to objectives.

I don't like modern indie games that leaves breadcrumbs, and refuse to elaborate the lore because "it's fun figuring it out yourself". They think they're doing "show, don't tell" but It's actually a lazy way of story writing. Prime offenders are Outer Wilds, Obra Dinn and Subnautica. I quit all three of them because I felt that they just dump you into the game and say "lol figure it out yourself it'd more fun that way". It's like a director minimally directing a movie and tells the movie audience to fill in the blanks themselves. I want to experience the director's vision.

No, I actually quite enjoyed the exploration at first when it was new and there was that sense of wonder, awe, and tension.

It was only after I started doing the same loops over and over for hours tying up all these dozens of loose (dead) ends, retreading the same areas, waiting for tiny timed windows to have a small chance to read a few lore tidbits or solve a pointless puzzle, chasing YET ANOTHER red herring that amounts to absolutely nothing, that I ultimately realized this is just a waste of time and the juice isn't worth the squeeze. I've seen the vast majority of what the game has to offer and the honeymoon period has worn off, now it's just become tired and tedious.

I guess, if you only think the coordinates are the only important item. each thing can lead you to other discoveries. however it's nonlinear, so you may have discovered something "ahead" by accident because there is a ton of leeway for experimentation in the game. You can get a partial hint and solve many of the puzzles.

I mean the game literally does give you a big checklist, except with no signposting or even subtle guidance on where you're supposed to go so it's easy to just aimlessly wander doing stupid and pointless tasks that amount to nothing due to no fault of your own.

It's like the developer is thinking of a number between 1 and 100 and you have to just guess which number he is thinking of that is actually part of the critical path and everything else is just superfluous lore bullshit.

the jellyfish shit? I don't even remember what was in the core but it was another pointless dead end. Also you can figure that out yourself, I mean you have zero tools at your disposal and the only thing in front of you is jellyfish that are entering the core so it should be obvious the jellyfish are how you get in. Really your only barrier to entry is thinking that just getting to the core is another pointless dead end rather than getting *inside* the core actually being the pointless dead end.

That's why I really hate puzzle games like this, you never know if you have the solution now or if it's some gay bullshit where you need to do something on the complete other side of the map that will allow you to proceed.

I blindly ran into the DLC on my first real run. I just had no idea where to even go so I aimed for the satellite thinking it would give me a map or something and noticed the sun being fucky. Rammed straight into the space ship at full speed and just managed to get inside and look around a bit before the reset. I was so annoyed at being interrupted I completely focused the spaceship not understanding jack fucking shit about half of what I found. By the time I got the rest of the game I was so used to the time limit and navigating annoying spaces I did not find any of it a problem. Spent more time in the DLC than the base game.

the lore doesn't guide to you the critical path retard, it's just bullshit flavor text. What you think are critical areas just amount to nothing, and other areas that are critical require you to go to some random bullshit area first.

Again, it's all just obfuscated layers of bullshit. Wander around aimlessly like a jackass wasting hours on end until you just happen to stumble upon it. There is a reason that the base game alone takes people around 25 hours excluding DLC and even looking things up. If you knew the critical path or could "figure it out through lore hurr durr" you could easily solve the game blind in a few hours. No, instead the game wants to waste your time retreading bullshit and chasing red herrings.

seeing as you're too fucking stupid.

The assumed goal at the start of the game is to find a way to stop the sun going supernova to save all your friends.

As you read the nomai text you see they had devices designed to induce/stop that. You see hints of the ash twin project, and that in general the nomai were unable to find some shit called the eye.

You try for the sun station, and see that its not causing the supernova, you see theres actually no way to stop the event from happening. while you learn this you see the events that killed all the nomai and that they were never able to get back to their ship.
Instead they found a method to get to the Eye, having no other way to escape your loop you can still do their cultural goal.

So now you know they have a ship, it needs power, you need coordinates to reach the eye, and that the ash twin project is something to find.

I wont say more but if you can't see that as a narrative you're genuinely a fucking retard.

>read hundreds of stupid ass lore logs just to have some vague idea of what you need, no idea where it could be at or how you reach there, and no idea the order in which you need to find the stupid bullshit necessary to reach those locations
Again, it's just fucking stupid time wasting tedium where you have to guess what's relevant to the critical path, when 95% is genuinely fucking pointless, 4% gives you "knowledge" (much of which you could very easily figure out yourself without it) and the last 1% is the actual fucking critical path.

It has the same problems as all open world games, even further exacerbated by having constant gates that required you did x, y, z first, as well as pules upon piles of completely pointless drivel that amounts to absolutely nothing except lore flavor text (the vast majority of plot threads in the game). You just stumble around like a retard to find information that tells you "keep stumbling around like a retard, but try to find this while you're stumbling around"
