Wish there were more game demos around
Would make it easier to see if a game is bad before wasting money on it, because it's better than seeing curated reviews manipulated by corpo crones and shareholder sharks. I remember back in the day I first played threads of fate on ps1 demo with the mini screen and it looked amazing. Also, banjo tooie on n64, rogue squadron 2 on gamecube, oddworld munch's odyssey on xbox, i remember being awed by rock solid 60 fps. I've only seen switch with bananza demos at target and frametimes are all over the place even outside of "stutters". How did rogue squadron 2 and munch's odyssey do it better with almost comparable graphical fidelity in 2001?

Just have an informed opinion.
It's that simple.

Harder to do when it's shoved into your face how "amazing" the game is, negative reviews are constantly deleted and negative blog posts/videos are de-ranked in the search algorithms. They are doing everything they can to make sur it's harder for you to be an educated consumer. Frankly, I'm REALLY fucking surprised I could even find a demo of bananza and play it, because it seems like it goes against fostering the kind of mental state they'd want a consumer to be in.
Anonymous No.717393025 >>717393247
You know since the beginning of time reviews were dishonest right.
Just get an informed opinion it's not hard sheesh.

Yeah but google/youtube search used to be better, and it was easier to find the opposing point of view (or 3rd point of view when it comes to politics). What are you supposed to do now, use yandex? The search quality is bad, even if it doesn't suppress dissenting opinions, and the AI is dogwater

That's 75% of why there aren't more demos around.
The other 25% is that instead of a standalone demo release, many devs are lazy and release the full fucking game with an arbitrary restriction coded in, call that a "demo", and then become shocked and dismayed when a hacker unlocks the full game for pirates overnight.

How does one get an informed opinion? What, in your opinion, makes it "not hard"? What resources are available to get an informed opinion in a reasonable time frame?
Anonymous No.717393787 >>717395245
>>717393475
People are so addicted to videos, there is no way for a "reasonable time frame" unless you ask /v/ and accept what we tell you as informed. Self-defeating, that.
The best way is to look at any user reviews available that need a tl;dr(because unless they're just spamming nonsense, they're mentioning a lot of things that will be informative to know,) and then compare that to random streamers and youtubers to see it in action and what they think. Helps in the latter case if you know some whose tastes align with yours.

Yeah, but there would be more if A) demos didn't reveal a game is shit, and B) devs weren't lazy.
There's been a bunch of games on steam that fell victim to the "release full game as demo, omg what do you mean people are downloading our demo and getting our whole game free?!" retardation, and it frightens other lazy as shit devs.

What, you thought I wouldn't read your longer post, considering I spent an unreasonable amount of time researching bananza? You said a reasonable time frame is impossible, after saying getting an informed opinion wasn't hard, isn't that a contradiction?

I actually found GameFly to be a pretty good service. It let me try a bunch of games (that I couldn't or wouldn't be able to pirate), and buying from them got you pretty cheap games if you wanted to keep something.

But that was 10 years ago. I'm sure it sucks total ass now -- the universal constant.

I know that rule #1 is nothing ever changes, and if a company or a reviewer claims innovation chances are they stole it and you should play the predecessor they stole from first, or buy the product the feature was stolen from that's probably on sale now, or discounted used.

watch no commentary gameplay videos if you can find them
pirate the game if you can and try it, or failing that, you can abuse gamepass free trials or just sign up for a single month to try games and then cancel and buy them later on sale
all urinalist reviews are worthless
make a note of games that look interesting and just don't buy them until they're at a relatively safe price that won't burn you as much
user reviews long after a game has come out can be somewhat helpful since the game has been discounted by then so sunken cost fallacy isn't as prevalent and the tribalism you see around new games is mostly gone.

Just watch unfiltered gameplay videos and see if you like the content or not. If you don't then ignore it and if you do well then there you go.

Yeah, I got to try it last week and just the starting punches alone had massive drops it was insane.

There is an entire slew of game demos you can play right now on Playstation 5 for free*

Reminder that the Xbox 360 had over 250 games with permanent downloadable demos available, and you didn't even need Xbox Live Gold to play them. All gone now that Microcock ended support for the 360, not that it really matters but still.

I don't think most people are capable of doing this because I see /v/ hype up licensed garbage that has the writing on the wall constantly. They either willingly ignore it in favor of wanting to have something to be excited about, or genuinely have very little experience with games to know any better.

>Relying on the same sphere that is basically harming consumer choice.
Honestly I will say this just try to look for Indies if you guys can or AA's. The current AAA scene outside of a few is not doing well right now and is becoming homogenized like the Movie and Music industry is where they delete reviews or think they can control everything for themselves no matter how bad and worse it gets. You have to start looking outward not inward. You have to develop the same mentality you had with rentals and keep digging for those gems and discard the trash when you find it. Recommend gems and hopefully we can recreate the industries we once had 30 years ago.

I did, and I formed my opinion not based on other people's, and I was baffled at how unanimous the "acclaim" was for something that looked like the worst dog shit I've ever seen, that's why I went down the rabbit hole of review manipulation

you can't get games from them consistently in a reasonable time anymore and it's been that way since covid. they'll also mark a game as delivered after the 4th day and it will randomly show up in your mailbox the 6th day. On the 1 disc plan this obviously fucks everything up because you can only really have a game for 3 weeks out of a month.
It's one of those things i've meant to cancel for years but haven't. i think i've had some ass game from them sitting on a counter for months that I haven't even played.
