Pseudo single player/coop/MMO game that has an identity crisis on what it is and for who.
Singleplayer/coop game for a simulated galaxy would have been great. A full MMO akin to EvE with full player control/galaxy growth would have been cool. A Sea of Thieves style jump in/jump out game would have been great.
What we got was a weird developer hybrid where they want players to have a persistent universe and impact but also not let players do whatever they want, leading to shit like the "power play" NPC driven narrative. It tried so hard to just be Elite but a sequel without realising customers wants/desires had changed.
Like it was obvious from day 1, everyone was saying it, they mostly wanted a full MMO with full player control. But they refused to let anyone have fun. Instead you got all these weird pseudo features. Full coop? Nah have wings. Player factions? Nah have power play. Economics? Na have NPC trading. Developing your own stations/systems with new economic requirements? Na have a linear upgrade check box with flat passive payment instead. Fucking Starsector has more economic depth than Elite, you can actually crush whole factions by monopolizing resources. Can't let you do that in Elite.
Also as a side point, space is fucking boring, its whats in space that's fun. The amount of time you have to waste moving around is insane. Last time I played I think I found it was 1m just to hop one system. Thats 15 fucking minutes to hop 15 systems.
