It could be such a great game, but they intentionally prevent it from being that. You want awesome dog fighting? Too bad, go back to the job board, also you have to contend with NPCs trying to kill your target, and if you aren't fast enough you auto fail missions

it could have been great but it's just dead in the water. Some people on the tranny sub are hailing it reborn because of the ARX ships but FDev literally losing money on F1 manager, that Sigmar thing, Planet coaster and the Jurassic world thing flopping. almost good game, almost

Pseudo single player/coop/MMO game that has an identity crisis on what it is and for who.

Singleplayer/coop game for a simulated galaxy would have been great. A full MMO akin to EvE with full player control/galaxy growth would have been cool. A Sea of Thieves style jump in/jump out game would have been great.

What we got was a weird developer hybrid where they want players to have a persistent universe and impact but also not let players do whatever they want, leading to shit like the "power play" NPC driven narrative. It tried so hard to just be Elite but a sequel without realising customers wants/desires had changed.

Like it was obvious from day 1, everyone was saying it, they mostly wanted a full MMO with full player control. But they refused to let anyone have fun. Instead you got all these weird pseudo features. Full coop? Nah have wings. Player factions? Nah have power play. Economics? Na have NPC trading. Developing your own stations/systems with new economic requirements? Na have a linear upgrade check box with flat passive payment instead. Fucking Starsector has more economic depth than Elite, you can actually crush whole factions by monopolizing resources. Can't let you do that in Elite.

Also as a side point, space is fucking boring, its whats in space that's fun. The amount of time you have to waste moving around is insane. Last time I played I think I found it was 1m just to hop one system. Thats 15 fucking minutes to hop 15 systems.

Also while im ranting, they could have just had a single player/coop game and then allowed modding. Which would have completely changed and improved the entire experience for everyone. You could have MADE the game you wanted.

Because all you want from a dev in a space sim game is them to give you the tools, and Elite has the best ships and some of the best combat of any space sim game ever. Beyond that it should have been up to players to choose how and what they played.

What killed me was that I can remember the kickstarter and the younger devs in the team being excited for all the potential player control and simulating they could do. Obviously all of that got VISIONED by the boomer CEO who hasn't given up any control to younger people who would have done a better job with Elite.

i don't even know why it's still operating. FDev literally said in their 2023 and 2024 financial and board reports they wanted to focus on their Managment Sim games like Tycoon, Planet, F1 manager and so on. they haven't mentioned elite in their reports besides the footnotes

My first 100 hours (in one week) of this game was a complete obsession. I was in awe at the sound effects, the realistic visuals that had me mesmerized every time I pulled into a planet's orbit, and I was so intent on earning credits to get better spaceships just so I can travel the galaxy like all the big boys.
Then I gave up on the engineering stuff, the missions became tiring, and the game to me was just go to star, go to star, go to star, go to star, then my playtime decreased. All the planets look the same, everything just looks the same. I was hoping we could get some actual biomes with unique terrain on these planets, but thats probably too advanced. The whole point of the game is flying in spaceships and it excels at that.
Weirdly enough I feel like going back. I kinda miss it. I miss taking screenshots while on foot on planets and just generally feeling alone with no one else around. I played this with GeForce Now on a Logitech G Cloud and it was the comfiest way to play the game. I wish I still had that thing.

If it were "just" travel time on autopilot, at least the kind of people who do long flights in flight sims might appreciate it. But you have to manually activate each individual jump. It's the worst kind of travel: there's too much waiting to be not be bored but too much interactivity to go make a sandwich.

I hit 500 hours before I really hit a wall, but by then I had enough credits for a carrier and every ship (that I had access to). Powerplay is a bit naff, but the Community Goals can be fun. Mining and Trucking are relaxing, the flight model (and sound) is still best in class so the pew-pew is fun. Exobiology is ezmoney and at times, some of the visuals are jaw-dropping.

i prefer star citizen's flight model, but i really do like the scale of elite dangerous, as in elite, you can go to thousands of star systems instead of just two.
but i really like how in elite you can control your ship in super cruise mode as opposed to star citizen's quantum travel.

the flight model in elite is very star war'sy and unrealistic though, i don't like how there are atmospheric rules when you are off a planet, AKA, rolling is faster than yawing.

elite is great, but i find myself playing scam citizen recently more despite the latter being a buggy piece of mess.

A potentially amazing game with a bottomless well of content that is squandered on an inept development team being led by equally clueless management. Every single aspect of the game follows the same pattern; announce a new exciting system that entire gameplay styles can be based around, implement the absolute barest bones necessary for the system to function and then never expand on it afterwards. Exobiology, exploration, infiltration, PvE ground shooter combat, mining, salvaging, trading etc are all in the same state of affairs. They repeatedly make the absolutely insane decision to put in all the hard effort developing new systems and then never build upon them afterwards. The end result is a predictable cycle of people getting the game, sinking a decent amount of time into trying out all the different things available and then be left wondering what the fuck is left to do with a vague sense that there should be easily ten times as much.

You can find geological formations (steam, water, ice and magma geysers mostly) and biological organisms, plus the new plants and fungus. Other than that and the occasional interesting land configuration there's nothing else really on them if they're not populated. Once Odyssey came out they increased the amount of random stuff you can find on them, like crash sites, wreckage, pirate stockpiles and small structures, but those aren't static.
