That was when Newgrounds was popular enough to generate substantial revenue from advertising.
Newgrounds doesn't get enough visitors nowadays so devs have to look for other ways to make money such as charging users directly.

Times change. Most of those dudes who made flash games/videos with no expectations for any reason other than to win one Newgrounds award or another did so when they were in their late teens/early 20s and had no financial obligations. Now they're grown up and they need money
