I boughted it in 2013. The only kickstarter I've ever backed. This was before it had reached its first kickstarter goal. Before the stretch goals. It was supposed to be a little space game with cool physics, that's it. Robert already had a working demo. Seemed like a safe bet.
IIRC it had less than 1million USD backing at the time.
Today it has over 800 million USD backing. And it's still not a real game.

The game never had a chance. They should have begun it with the development of an in-house engine that would have been specifically tailored for what the game was aiming to achieve, instead of jumping through three engine iterations and playing catch-up with an endless line of promises they will now never deliver on. Even a game like EVE Online, that had been developed with these exact things since the beginning, still had to perform a full engine rewrite later, to update the game and its capabilities in order to support an expanding playerbase and introduce added functionality to the servers and the client.

Star citizen can never be released. They have built their entire company and business model as a system of constant development and backer support. If it ever did actually 'release' it would completely cripple them.
