That franchise was seriously done so dirty, it was decades ahead of its time but people shat on it. I always preferred it to post tekken-4 where people would block string/pokes for most of the match.

First off, DoA has Marie and Honoka which kills most people's perceptions of it.
Then you also have the fact that DoA doesn't have nearly a memorable male cast so your average faggot can pretend to play them while not so secretly jerking off to the female cast. DoA has no Akuma for the edgelords, no Ryu for the boring I only play male main characters, and etc.

That being said, most people who actually play fighting games don't fucking want wallbreaks and stage transitions. The other points are true though, it's got easy access, costumes, and other shit but people didn't gravitate towards it. We're in some weird dichotomy where it's still not okay to be fanservice oriented while still celebrating fanservice stuff. The audience has no idea what it truly wants but DoA wouldn't be the first fighting game to end up that way.
