on top of this it was due to an active shift to multiplayer starting with shogun 2. god forbid combat takes longer than 20 minutes or kids might get bored. this then had negative impact on balancing as well.

Very easy, Rome 2. It was the start of everything that is shit about modern TW. It started implementing less simulation in the battles, and more arcade behaviours. Stats became the main driving force behind battle outcomes, instead of tactics. The shitty army system, where every army needs a general started there. These are in my opinion the major things making TW a worse experience to play nowadays, and they all made their debut in Rome 2.

This. People blame fantasy for killing history but the fact of the matter is that they haven't made a good historical game since Shogun 2. They had to pivot or die as a company.

The funny part is that Rome 2 is where CA got rich. Med 2 almost bankrupted the company, forcing CA to kill CA Australia. Shogun 2 also didnt make money as Sega expected. If not for Rome 2 money, TWWH would have gotten the budget.

Thought on some the underrated parts of the series?
>Attila
it was more of a bandaid to rome 2's gameplay issues, but it did a great job at it.
morale shock, tactics, cavalry, missiles, siege were massively better in it and worth to fight instead of just auto resolve
The campaign gameplay is kinda horseshit but the theme of playing survival mode in apocalyptic-like setting is pretty cool.

>Three kingdoms
Among the best campaign gameplay and mechanics in the franchise. Diplomacy absolutely matters, planning ahead of your conquest is important too. End game challenges of fighting equal peer and alliance is good enough, only held back by the character spam due to the retinue system.
Battle gameplay is fairly standard, but then it's crippled by overpowered hero units just like warhammer (and no, the record mode is an after thought. it's simply a downgraded version)

I played every single total war as they came out. I still play shogun 2 and medieval 2 constantly, and the only other total war I play is warhammer 3, when friends want to do another campaign.
Please do tell me when total war died.
