Am I the only one that sees how much Nintendo seemingly despises game journalists for some weird reason? I mean first they basically abandoned E3 when they started making directs and it reached the point where they launched their own news app. Why the fuck are they so against using them for promotions?

Nintendo never abandoned E3, they consistently had the biggest show floor presence there. They just moved their presentations to a digital format because it was environment that was fully under control. Because they had a bunch of unfortunate technical issues when showing off Skyward Sword on stage and because Iwata was getting visibly sicker and could no longer do large scale presentations

In the past, journalists always treated Nintendo like the company that made kids games. They admitted they were the big guys who made Mario and Zelda, but their consoles and other games were never popular or good enough. They didn't give them the same attention as they did with Microsoft and Sony, who were regarded as the true strong companies to keep happy and pacified with good articles, great reviews, and a lot of pandering. Every little thing Nintendo did was picked and analyzed under a microscope and then criticized. I still remember that polite-aggressive argument Reggie and Geoff had during a conference. It was embarrassing to see, Geoff kept teasing him about graphics, until Reggie used the "alright but is it fun?" card.

The reason Nintendo hates game journalism is their own incompetence, but really, they've hated free press from the start.
Nintendo Power ran for what, 25 years? Announcements made exclusively through it, was pushed as THE games magazine, had reviews for Nintendo's own games in it talking about how good they were, it was a joke.
In the 2010s, Nintendo tried to crackdown on WHO WAS PLAYING THEIR GAMES ON YOUTUBE. You had to get personally verified by them in order to play fucking Mario Party.
They used to do live events, wanna know why they stopped? Because they embarrassed themselves live on stage for several years in a row. The Skyward Sword live demo was the last straw.

So, yeah, Nintendo has always been antagonistic with not just journalism but any media on their games that they don't control.

Anon the "journalists" are constantly promoting piracy specifically against them, sometimes directly in the articles and reviews about Nintendo games while also running a dedicated smear campaign of latching onto anything that can be slightly construed as negative and shitting on them for it. It just happened this week with RTA having to pull the Nintendo lineup. Nintendo didn't sue them, RTA is a business entity handling donations, and especially in Japan you need to do that shit by the books or you get in serious legal trouble. It's actually insane that Kotaku dropped this the day after Dread came out. I wouldn't care so much if it was Mario or Pokemon or some shit where success is assured regardless but Metroid's position, especially at that point, was not so secure. People like you have never worked for the game industry. Do you know how many indirect bribes companies have to make to these journalists to get a fair review? Sega had to fly out journalists to Hawaii for an all week inclusive vacation just do they don’t show how bad Sonic Frontiers is. Konami had to do a private exclusive showing at their HQ for MGSV and almost all of those reviewers, only one (a Russian) exposed how boring/dull and empty the game was. Capcom has to constantly give inside peeks to their games so journalists don’t throw the game down after for playing for 5 minutes and make a review out of those 5 minutes. Nintendo has this push and pull relationship and the moment they show lip service they turn on Nintendo, so they get barred after that. Nintendo has hired about 2-3 people directly from the journalism industry for being their dick suckers on the Internet; definition of quid pro quo.

The “review industry” is a sham in every industry and game companies have it the worst. That’s not to make you sympathize with them but to understand that these fucks always want something in return for them to review a game properly or not as harshly. Their employers, if caught wind of this, usually force or hint to their biz dev people to tell these publishers, “hey if you buy an ad with us for X amount of months, we will focus on your game completely.” The system is broken and if you’re an indie you’re basically fucked unless you’re flavor of the month and review sites and journalists want to ride the wave just so they get clicks.
