I thought the combat was fun, but the gunplay was surprisingly dogshit. Unless I'm remembering wrong they pulled in all star devs who worked on gta and saints row. I also feel like not crashing the shit out of my car/bike was really hard in that game. I guess the devs knew that since it had a score counter for not dying on the road.

Yakuza - goofyness. Just beat 8 and they completely ruined the genre. Everything boils down to incredibly sad/funny. Lame!

I feel like everyone that complains about the gunplay is playing like a retard thinking it's a cover shooter. Instead of going balls to walls with the slow-mo and mixing in melee to take down enemies like it's an action flick, which is very obvious that it's what the game wants you to do.

Melee combat being the headliner is not an excuse for the gunplay being dog shit. Games like True Crimes, Stranglehold, Dead to Rights, and Max Payne all predated Sleeping Dogs. Hell my standards were at the level of Saints Row and it was still worse.

Worth playing, but it's very lacking in sandbox. Main story is fun with lots of setpieces to play with the combat, but outside of it the world is lifeless (apart from NPC voicelines) and lacks the opportunities for combat. What little enemy gang members out there are only in the world to guard collectibles and you'd be lucky to find them hanging out near the execution combat systems.

Not disagreeing with you but this is actually the marketing angle Sega took with Yakuza 4 which was a big part of what nearly killed the series in the west before it took off. I think a lot of people legitimately do think exploring a big city = GTA.

I played it for the first time years ago and loved it. Better at brawling than GTA and worse but manageable car/gunplay. Immersive world and not half bad story.

That's not entirely unreasonable though. Though its not my favorite series, it did set a pretty good standard for others to follow. Anyone who was a fan of the True Crimes games knows Sleeping Dogs is pretty much another one of those, rather than a GTA clone.

It's a good game. Worth the playthrough.
The combat is very crunchy and as edgy as it sounds I had fun just going around and beating up women.

yes the combat and some story bits are cool, the gta elements are not that well implemented and there is a shitload of collectibles that you dont need besides that statues that are the easiest eons to get because they are mostly story related.

finished it a few days ago and ti was a blast

For me the game declined a lot with the firearms, the worst thing is that you still have many melee skills to unlock that will no longer serve for nothing because the enemies carry machine guns.
At least they would have saved them for the final stretch of the game.
