Gaming is in a much better state today than in the past, boomers cant accept this because they've been blinded by nostalgia.

At least you owned your games in a way that would let you play them as much as you wised back then, no always online DRM bullshit. And don't even get me started on amount of work and passion that was put into games because best profit strategy in development wasn't clearly lined out. It's not just nostalgia.

Only certain games, and there are games today that basically require you to look up a wiki. Which doesn't cost anything, but on the other hand you don't get a physical item like with magazines and guides.
>artificial difficulty bullshit forcing people to rent games multiple times to be able to finish them
As opposed to forcing people to pay monthly subscriptions for renting games online?
>no Youtube so most game reviews came from paid shills
Good thing YouTube is 100% free of paid shills.

No actually, it was a lot better when you, the player, had to discover things about the game. Or god forbid, talk to people in real life.

Console gaming peaked in 5th gen, after that it would have been overtaken by PC, except that investors got fooled by Sony's DVD player, Nintendo's brand and Microsoft's malicious attempt to corner the market.
So instead gaming regressed massively and we're stuck in a rut, because consoles have not meaningfully advanced in 25 years but are still the lowest common denominator. Games even look worse than they did a decade ago, because the baseline for game dev is the worst version.

It’s a made up term game journos like to use to explain away why they suck at games, but the application of the term I like is when a game defines a system of rules and then arbitrarily breaks them to make the game harder.

e.g. Being able to sneak up on enemies for bonus damage, but making it so it doesn’t work on bosses.
Anonymous No.717429239 [Report] >>717429309
>>717428628
>>717427798
or alternatively, every enemy in the game uses a red warning sign to indicate an unblockable attack and a blue warning sign for an attack that has to be parried
then one boss reverses it without warning

or a boss that instantly kills you when it dies, if you haven't used a shield spell the turn before, again with no warning

there are genuine artificial difficulty examples, where the player gets killed due to something they could not have anticipated based on ingame information

not really no, souls bosses tend to not be true artificial difficulty
that said Malenia's waterfowl dance can be a genuine example, since the way to dodge it is completely arbitrary, it will kill you if you don't dodge it and when the game released, she could pretty much do it at any arbitrary moment

most attacks in souls games come out slow enough you can reasonably dodge them based on reflexes
that's why waterfowl dance is arbitrary difficulty, you can't dodge it based purely on reflexes

Modern gaming sole purpose is to perfect the retro gaming experience, everything else is secondary.
Anonymous No.717430093 [Report]
>>717429723
Nah, enemies are slow enough that you can observe their attacks and plan accordingly how to engage, most areas also give you enough time to look around for ambushes so you can choose how to engage on your own terms.

>cryptic levels and puzzles
in some cases, sure.
>artificial difficulty
buzzword with no meaning. yes, games of yore were designed to be ball bustingly difficult because they were quarter bait. that, or they were short and they wanted to make sure you got some time out of them. if you git gud you can beat games like ninja gaiden 2 dark sword of chaos and castlevania 3 in half an hour, but it takes time to get to the point where you can consistenly deal with all the game's challenges. the same is true for modern games like resident evil 4, for example
>no youtube, most reviews came from shills
sorry to say, but your favorite youtube personality is a shill. he got paid to promote the game you're slurping up, and he was only allowed to say specific things about it because he received heavy handed "guidelines" in exchange for a review copy. not to say that some reviewers aren't independent, from-the-heart, and genuine, but you never know what goes on behind the scenes.

how were you supposed to figure out with your intelligence that if you didn't loot this one chest the first time you came through an area, without knowing you'd return to that area at a later point in time, that chest instead of a bunch of consumables would suddenly contain the best weapon in the game?

>cryptic levels and puzzles, since there was no internet at the time people were forced to buy magazines like Nintendo Power to be able to play the game
People actually searched around for things and combed areas because games back then were meant to be played for weeks or months not 100% over a weekend so you could rush out and buy more slop.
Secrets were supposed to be rewards for autists who were obsessed with the game or players to surprisingly stumble across on their 10th playthrough not for every normie to get in one run. Most games today don't even have secrets to find, you just run to the end of the story.
They also had forums which were actually faster and substantially less homosexual than the internet of today

>artificial difficulty bullshit forcing people to rent games multiple times to be able to finish them
But today nearly all games are rentals that you keep paying for.

>no Youtube so most game reviews came from paid shills
The average youtuber today is more of a shameless shill than the magazine ads were back then.
