rdr2 is one of those games where its hard for me to think of how to improve it from a mechanical point of view. its story mode and combat felt so lacking, but its hard for me to point out why.

i think maybe its due to how there is a lack of feeling or real danger or consequence. it might have benefitted from a more severe save system. i.e., you basically only get a save point when you move to a new area. then, when you're fighting 40 enemies on the last mission, it won't feel like a chore. it will feel extremely daunting, which is what it wants you to feel.

It's just throwing lots of money at some animators so they can make something that looks cool but doesn't do anything for the gameplay.
A game where NPCs could actually change the world by cutting down forests and building them into settlements over time would actually be significant.

What RDR2 has over others in this regard is that they are polished (although issues are still present such as the floating in the dog video posted in here) and they have smooth, detailed and lively animations for them which is no small feat to accomplish in an open world. If you are curios about an older title with CS setups of this calibre if not better in dynamism and uniqueness check Gothic 1 and 2.

The only "wasted" thing there was maybe 1 (ONE) animator's 1 (ONE) day, who only spends time animating stuff. Everything else that goes into that little NPC, like modelling, rigging, lighting, coding, are resources that were spend not just for creating that, but for the entire game since that NPC can be used and re-used in multiple instances in the game. That 1 (ONE) animator has no idea about gameplay or how he could "improve" it (which he already did btw by making that little animation).

Damn, tendies still seethe about this game 7 years later.

It's less of a cowboy game and more of a cowboy sim. You're afforded very little agency in how you complete missions and when juxtaposed against the admittedly incredible polish of the very large setting it becomes even further frustrating for many people. The polish though is only surface level; the game looks very nice and there are plenty of details but only to the extent that interacting with the world becomes tedious. It doesn't help that the only real reward you get for most of the side content is just boring clothing or money that you can either spend on a handful of guns or more clothing.

This games gameplay is too shallow for me. The shootouts are so easy that it makes me wish there was another difficulty slider, but it tickles a specific itch where all the autism in my brain sits where I can just walk around and hunt animals and RP walk through towns and look at items and shit. I can’t articulate why I like it so much, because it’s a lot of window dressing, but it’s so much detail for such a huge budget game that it’s hard not to admire it.
