Superstars is an alright game that expects way too much from the paint-swilling retards who call themselves Sonic fans. It's designed more like Sonic 1, as in like an actual platformer game and less like Sonic 2 and Mania, as in a bunch of high speed rollercoasters with occasional springs, spikes or pits to prevent you from just holding right and sleepwalking through it
One stage has a gimmick where a giant piston in the background slams down and stuns you for a brief second, a gimmick which had so many different tells for when it was going to happen, yet these paint huffing troglodytes just couldn't wrap their heads around it and blamed the game for "ruining their fun"

Not really "hated", but it's generally seen as the most okay Mega Man game ever released. The Robot Masters are okay, the stages are okay, the weapons are okay, the Wily Castle is okay (Though we all agree the transition to Wily 5 was funny as fuck), and the music is okay. Everything about it is perfectly serviceable, but it lacks a lot of the stand-out aspects that other games have, for better or worse
The only things people cite as highlights are the DLC stages and Bass, and even those were a bit muted by being on-disk DLC. There was also supposed to be a 2P mode but that got axed despite being pretty much complete, probably because of the falling out between Capcom and IntiCreates. Real shame too, 'cause it looked really fun and actually made the weak weapons much stronger, since using them when in close proximity to the other powered them up
