My parents were never against video games, but there were two that my dad got me when I was around 7 (Turok and Duke Nukem 64) that really pissed my mom off and I definitely wasn't allowed to play any other M rated games after that until I was around 14. I assume my dad just didn't know how gory and adult those games would actually be when he got them. Especially because I had played the original Duke Nukem 1 and 2 on PC before that and they were nothing like the vulgar and gory direction the series took afterward.

My youngest cousin was raised this way, kind of. He was never allowed any video games or consoles, but was allowed to play shitty games on an iPad under highly restricted time limits. He's around 17 now I think and the angriest, most miserable kid I've ever met. He resents his parents a lot and I imagine he's going to rebel extremely hard if he goes to college or moves out after high school. They micromanaged his childhood so hard that he's become way worse than whatever he would have been if he had been given a bit more grace and freedom to just be a kid.

When you micromanage a child to that degree, they never learn about consequences or how to take responsibility for themselves, they only learn how to follow orders. Depending on how they react to it, they end up with zero initiative, so they need to be ordered about for the rest of their lives or they go completely the other way, indulging in everything you kept from them until they self destruct.

Oh hey, that was my my folks, without the religion. Honestly, I think that makes it worse, Catholic guilt without the absolution isn't fun. If I /did/ manage to get a console or handheld somehow, they had a tendency to confiscate and "lose" them.
Add in "friendly" mocking every time I showed romantic interest in anyone and punishing me for being "obsessed" if I ever really got into anything. Or being gaslit into thinking mood swings from regularly skipping 2-3 meals were a result of lack of self control. No shit the teenager who hasn't eaten anything all day is going to be grouchy.
This was supposed to help with the autism It's taken me years to get any self confidence or sense of worth back.
