What are some good ones?

Been looking at Haute42 but they have so many models it's hard to know which one is the best for the price range

Haute is a great deal for entry level leverless, and you can save a bit by ordering from their official store on Aliexpress if things are still the same as a couple years back. I got a now old T16 from them in 2023 for $80 that's better feeling than a lot of "real" fightsticks I've bought around the $150 range. My only complaint since then is the acrylic can creak if you bend the sheets being dumb if you go that route instead of their metal options

You'll need a converter of some sort if you intend to play on PS5 at some point

I tested their S16, T16, M16 and M16+ and they all had severe double-clicking issues. It's not something you noticed in fighting games but I like using leverless for other games and it can get pretty noticeable.
I'd like to give them one last chance with picrel but I can't get it off Amazon and I don't really want to order stuff I'm likely to return from Ali.

To answer your question OP, I think P12 is good for a first leverless. It has has everything you need and is only about $60. I think the M Ultra is the best if you want a wasd layout because it has really well spaced out buttons. All the models on AliExpress also go on sale quite often. If you plan on going to locals, you may need to buy Haute42's booter5 for it to have ps5 support. There is a workaround to get ps4 support without that, however.

All Hautes are basically the same; the differences between models are only cosmetic, like the switches are the same. The T13-T16 (the same model as the S13-S16, but larger) is the most standard model available. But if you want another model is ok, the price isnt that different between them

Some of the best BBCF players in recent years have all been pad players. In fact, the current best player who just won EVO (among other recent offline tourneys) is running Carl on a pad and Carl is probably among the all time most difficult fighting game characters.

I got the M 16 Ultra recently. Haute's stuff is really the only option if you want to spend sub 200 freedom bucks. I have only just started learning leverless and traditional fighters in general, so I kind of don't know any better but the build quality is good and the software is slightly complicated but also good. The included switches to me feel a little cheap but I'm used to tactile switches on a keyboard so possibly just bias on my part.

Objectively faster motion inputs than stick. Also better control over your character's movement. Pad is on the same level as leverless really but for me Leverless is MUCH less hand fatigue. I also get a swollen thumb from sticks or doing slide motions on d pads after long hours. You're correct about the whole keyboard thing also, some models even use literal wasd placement.
