Sonic games just do something other platformers don't, both in 2d and 3d. There's really not that many high speed platformers and even those that exist were often inspired by Sonic.
The series also has great and memorable character design, music and overall visual presentation.
Sonic Adventure is kusoge, but there's no other kusoge like it.

The final, ultimate blackpill is that very few of the 3D Sonic games are legitimately bad. They just have a very high skill ceiling that rewards memorisation and mastery of the physics and controls; this causes the average gamer to bounce off them because they cannot be brute forced, claiming they are "shit games" because they don't want to take the time to learn them. Of course this group includes journalists, hence the stigma.

Once you git gud at 3D Sonic, you unlock platforming godhood.

The core issue is that Sonic levels are meant to be replayed over and over for higher scores and faster completion times, but most people don't really play games like that anymore. They don't care about their score or time, they only care about beating the level.
