Is th.is the most overrated game of all time?

>Combat is so fucking easy that you never even hear the battle theme get to the good part, just the shitty intro
>The positional "mechanics" are half baked and only matter in like 3 battles
>Didn't even invent ng+, atb or team attacks (their most jacked off features).
>Overworlds are empty as shit and small too, you can walk entire continents in 7 seconds flat

>the main theme is overplayed, more likely to hear it more than just the regular battle theme
>The best part is frog vs magus and that's only like 1 hours of the total 17 hours runtime
>no side content aside of giving money to poor family and the side quests at the literal last hour of the game

It sounds like OP doesn't get JRPGs. It's an adventure game that resembles an anime. It has a difficulty level that suits its target audience (kids). People like it for nostalgia reasons and because it has cool stuff like multiple endings and great music. It isn't meant to be a balls to the wall challenge or a gigantic open world sandbox. It's a fun adventure for kids about time travel and coming of age.

RPGs are the most overrated genre. You could read a book and have the same experience unless you lack imagination, which 99% of RPG fans do.

FF 3 and 5 have better combat and skills than FF6. And better out of combat gameplay as well. So does Chrono Trigger.

Literally all FF6 has going for it is music and presentation. And I still think FF5 and Chrono beats it in presentation as well.

I'd say music and graphics for its time were definitely 10s. But the biggest thing it excells at is pacing. Most popular JRPGs have good music and graphics, but suck at pacing. Chrono Trigger stands out because it has these things and also feels way more polished in pacing.

The only area I find not so good is 2300 AD. And it's still better than areas in most JRPGs. Ironically the best areas in Chrono Cross are the ones tied to 2300 (Sea of Eden and Chronopolis).

Yes, to be a simplistic but satisfying RPG with a good story. It's why it will always be touted as the best RPG by many simply because it was the first. Even other titles that might have competed (FF6 or others) are a bit too convoluted. Judging it by today's standards will never work, you can release any number of mediocre rpgs today that in a vacuum might actually be better than Chrono Trigger but no one will see it like that simply because they are derivative.

Not even close. Dragon Quest III-V and Final Fantasy III and V did it before. And the people who worked on those games worked on Chrono Trigger. That's what led to Chrono Trigger being good.

OP keeps accusing Chrono Trigger of being the "first movie game" when it was actually one of the last good Square games before they went down the movie track.

Suikoden I and II have very similar styles of sprite graphics and pacing to Chrono Trigger. Similar characters/tone. And close to what Chrono Trigger would be if it had a full turn based system (combos skills, etc). Suikoden III not as much, but similar in characters.

Suikoden also influenced Chrono Cross.

I feel like the End of Time should have done a 1999 AD rebuild postgame after Lavos is defeated.

Chrono Trigger introduced a bunch of features to jrpgs. seamless turn based battles, new game plus, area of effect attacks, combined character attacks, multiple endings. Scene like the Trial had consequences for user actions. Amazing 2d for its time as well.

Chrono Trigger should have had a Ninja party member.

It's all based on subjectivity. There's people who claim Mozart can never be passed. But I can name dozens of composers who I think are better. Some before his time (Vivaldi) and many after. One of them is still alive and composing right now.

You also have to judge based on genre and methods of writing, as you alluded to with your example. But just as you can say Vergil had some knowledge Homer didn't, you can say the same thing about authors after Shakespeare. And using this comparison technique is also why some people think Shakespeare didn't write all the plays attributed to his name. Some of them are just way too different than the others. And match some of his contemporaries styles more.
