Around 2011 when all of the CoD fags who picked on nerds for playing "fantasy" games were suddenly interested in Skyrim and then overtook the genre.

Without social media, the iphone is just a phone that can play games. The increased popularity of apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tiktok, dating apps and so on have had huge ramifications for how humans socialize. We were fine with cell phones before social media became widespread.

Who gives a fuck? Just play games and enjoy life. Gaming has never been more socially acceptable than it is now, but even if it wasn't, who cares? More women play games than ever before as well, especially younger women.
It matters when you try to talk with people irl but no one plays vidya and if they know you play vidya they look at you as a manchild and this starts to make you hide this fact from people and socializing less with them resulting in you becoming a dweeb.
>especially younger women.
they play it casually like a single game per year and also even they after 22 quit vidya entirely

It really was the perfect storm. Smartphones gave everyone a dopamine button, and social media weaponized it. Before you knew it, your aunt was posting minion memes, your friends were filming every meal, and teenagers were learning self-worth through likes. Tech was supposed to connect us, and it did-just long enough to make us all hate each other.
Officially? Sometime around the 7th gen. Playstation blew the doors wide open from the days of Sega vs. Nintendo. PS1 still remains one of the best selling consoles of all time, to say nothing of the PS2. PS3 wasn't exactly their best gen, but the 360 and Wii were more than enough to still build off that momentum to really hit that breakthrough point.

This is the answer. Before Skryim, casual video games like Halo and Call of Duty were commonplace for "bros". Once Skyrim came out all of those people who stuck to shooters/sports games actually started delving deeper into the hobby. I'm not saying Skyrim is some hardcore game with a ton of depth. But compared to Madden or fucking Halo it has a shit load of depth. The release and success of Skyrim is when video games went from "nerdy shit for nerdy losers" to "hey, this is actually kind of cool. let's all just admit that you're not a failure if you want to play video games."
I also attribute the success of Destiny to gaming becoming much more mainstream. Before Destiny any MMORPG was the ultimate loser-core game. Wow? For losers. RuneScape? MegaLosers etc etc. But Destiny was basically an MMOFPS which was cool, and "okay" to play and like.

Ah, the days when internet culture was predominately white dudes just having fun making stuff and nerding about stuff, and kids pretending to be adults so they could enjoy it too…
2007 really was the beginning of the end, and 2013 was when it really felt solidified. Nothing has meaningfully changed since then aside from gen AI making the modern internet even more schizo than it already was. Game design and tech have stagnated. Movies are still using the fucking Inception horn 15 years later. Every trailer for every single thing is exactly the same. Remakes and incestuous nostalgiabait are everywhere and haven’t changed at all. It feels like we’re stuck in a timewarp where the only thing that changes is things getting worse and worse.

I read an article about how the majority of zoomers supposedly get all of their news from tiktok. I'm not sure how bullshit it is but the thought of that being true is fucking terrifying.
>>717449274 >too cool for a dweeb like me growing up
metal was always like 50% dweebs and nerds and 50% mentally ill people
and now it's lame and gay like everything else
I can't imagine them getting their news anywhere BUT tiktok. You think those fuckers are opening a newspaper? It's hard enough to get millennials to read more than the headline of an article and zoomers' attention spans are even more shot.
