They honestly have a chance if they can play the 20 year game. I have 500 games on steam so I have a vested interest in them doing well so I have continued access to them. If fortnite kids are building a solid library with the free games they might then have the same sunk cost for epic. Because you can't beat a service at critical mass with lots of buy-in. Valve was the first big digital distributor on PC, the only way to beat them was to time-travel. Xbox happened around the same time but Xbox also just only existed on the Xbox.

It would have given players an Illusion of choice: "I can pay full price and stay on steam, or I'll save some money and buy on epic. Fuck it, I'll get it on epic". But because players had the choice between epic or not getting the game, they felt forced onto the platform against their will.
