That was the original Xbox.
It brought normies to vidya (the infamous wider audience) and introduced the idea of multiplats, aka games aimed at the lowest common denominator - in hardware, control scheme and target audience.

You are thinking of the PS2. Look at the attachment rate for games along with the top selling games on the system, and you will see it's mostly normalfag slop. Xbox was a very niche console for it's time and only started bringing in dude gamers (who are only a small sliver of the normalfag demographic) towards the end (and most already owned a ps2 anyways).
