The gore system is still good but he's using a special ammo as you already noticed. It's not explosive though, it's sound. That's why there are these vibrations. From what I understand, KF3 utterly failed to understand that, for a horde shooter to be good, players must be forced out of their comfort zone.
If they are not, then the gameplay simply becomes a DPS race check.
KF1 understoods this the best: a demo firing non-stop would increase the DPS of the team but would rage every Scrakes leading to a team wipe.
KF2 partially understood this. Healing is too strong, the Scrake is nerfed with his stupid dance, Siren is useless, but it is still present.
KF3 has none of this.
