The obsession with celebrity voice acting was already a trend back in the PS2 and 360 eras. The trend came and went with seemingly little impact on game sales so I can't really see it coming back in a big way.

It could always be worse anon. They could use AI for voice over.
I'd take eceleb voice acting over AI slop any day.

It mostly does not matter, because all Western voice acting is direction based. They don't pick what voice they use, they are told how to exactly how to say every specific line, how long to say words for, how to enunciate, and studios use specific tropes and voices placed with those tropes. Studios don't want anything but that standard. The only reason celebrity voice acting sounds worse then VAs is lack of direction ('don't inconvenience the 'star''), or studios wanting celebrities to use their main recognizable voice as opposed to having them do literally anything at all. VAs aren't doing much either in terms of acting they're not allowed to.

It's nothing new. They got Patrick Stewart to play Uriel Septim and Sean Bean to play Martin Septim back in 2006 because they were well known, not strictly because they were good (although they definitely did a great job). The rest of the game had a small group of actors voicing everything to its detriment because they blew all their budget on famous actors. It became one of the top complaints about the game.

I don't disagree with this simply because voice acting is expensive as fuck compared to any other assets, and you can find free stuff that randos record that is just about as good if you simply want generic lines for battle cries and whatnot.

And if you introduce voice acting at all for dialogue, then people expect it throughout the whole game and are disappointed if it isn't.

Get a study/discussion room in your local library. They're usually pretty soundproof because they're meant for people to talk in without disturbing people in the library. As long as you aren't literally shouting, no one should hear you at all. Free compared to an expensive recording studio.

Celebrities can do a decent job but they require equal effort from direction and writing. Otherwise it's just budget blowout for no real gain.
