I got my first PC in 1995. Never had a console. Never played a single Japanese game due to that for years and years on end.

Then I finally decided to delve into them as a young adult.

Outside of a few outliers, they are FUCKING AWFUL, no matter the genre. Braindead and overly complicated stories; the same 10 character tropes reused over and over; game mechanics that haven't evolved since the 80s, and so on, and so forth.

The only high quality parts are usually the soundtracks, though I've read in a few places those are often just plagiarized from other media.

People often say that Game Freak only hires young talent who are just starting out in their careers and will work for any salary in order to put a big company on their resume, but I don't buy that. You look at the design of their games, and it's clearly not just the work of inexperienced people, but of people who are deliberately trying to do a bad job.
My idea is that the company has doctrines that must be followed, and I'm not kidding, one of the doctrines implies that you MUST do bad work. The idea is that if you raise the quality too much, you have no room to evolve later, and as long as you can sell junk, it's better to keep it low quality so that when times are lean, you have room to improve to try to attract consumers again.
In other words, making bad games is a deliberate strategy at Game Freak.

Fire types are terrible in gen 1, Charizard's special is garbage, it has no boosting moves, it's weak to Ice moves, it can't do shit against a good chunk of the elite 4, sucks early game, doesn't do much by mid to late game, isn't fast enough to fully abuse gen 1's crit mechanics, no good coverage, can't learn Fly in Red, is stuck with garbage moves for way too long, Moltres completely outclasses it, zoomies like you have no clue how terrible the poor bastard was back then.
