It's a 100% tariff against semiconductor manufacturers that aren't currently investing in US manufacturing. But almost all of them already are other than mainland chink companies that don't export anyway.
>>717462660The greatest superpower on Earth has a population coasting off of post ww2 exports and a completely fabricated global economy. Americans are unironically too stupid to participate in the modern world in a manufacturing capacity, you either have relatively educated white collar people, or uneducated retards with no in between. Those retards were supposed to be upskilled to work modern blue collar jobs, but they didn't of their own volition and there wasn't a good process in place to coerce them into it. So now you have "factory workers" over in asia that do shit like operate and maintain machines, work in clean room semiconductor manufacturing etc. doing relatively skilled blue collar labor, but you have americans who work the "I put the top of the sandwich on" factory jobs being like
>where is muh semiconductor job! meanwhile their beard crumbs would immediately violate any class 100 clean room.
Too many Americans are too stupid.
>>717462919Nobody wanted to pursue EUV lithography.
Everyone thought it was a fools errand.
ASML soldiered on though - in what was pretty much a Hail Mary play, because the company was headed for the cliff's edge. ... And then they struck gold and made it work.
They gambled big, and won.
Basically - they won at the American Dream.
And they're not even American.
By the time they did, because everyone else had basically abandoned their research a decade earlier thinking it wasn't going to go anywhere, ASML had an entire decade's worth of a head start. Effectively that meant they had immediately conquered the entire market. And everyone else had to play catchup.
Which didn't happen, because most realized they'd be fucked trying to close that gap anyway - as their general understanding of that field of science/engineering was, by then, fundamentally lacking due to a brain drain. All the talent had been sucked up. By ASML.

>>717462427>genuine question, im asking with an open mind and good faithwell, extra moola, for one.
That combined with all the gubment cuts made June the first month in about 9 or 10 years to actually have a surplus of tax dollars as opposed to adding to the deficit. Which in turn opens the door to lowering taxes and fighting inflation, which was as high as 8% in 2022, to where it now is at about 2.5% to 2.7% or so and is on a downward trend according to the CPI, for one. So, the general idea is that we can leverage these tariffs to force better trade deals, which as I understand has worked for the most part, but pissed a lot of countries off since we had some of the least balanced trade deals, including goofy shit like over 200 billion in trade subsidies to Canada, but also as a means to force political clout over countries which has also worked. Also encourages the creation of US manufacturing plants to increase job growth and domestic manufacturing which would make everything cheaper. They are also trying to create legislation to force US companies to hire Americans as opposed to outsourcing for cheap labor, but I have no clue how it'll end up.
That's the general idea, and I think ending national reliance on trade is a net positive and the years our country was the best was when we had strong self reliance and good domestic manufacturing. But these things take time, so naturally time will tell, and every economic advisor who has ever proposed this has said it'll get worse before it gets better, so keep that in mind. That being said, before retards pick apart this post to death, keep in mind that all politicians are evil and I doubt anything is going to get cheaper no matter what, and at BEST this is just going to keep shit from getting more expensive for longer as opposed to actually lowering prices. And any moved saved nationally is just getting shipped to Isntreal.

>>717463280honestly, its complex
for a long time america has been content to just sell to everyone else and for the world to enjoy a pax americana
but lately faggots have been getting too uppity for them, they really felt that they had the right to interfere with everyone else's shit and have nobody try to get one over them
the rise of china as an economic powerhouse threatens the current world order, and american has largely been caught out after selling a lot of industry to them for perhaps too long
a stronger position is required to continue to enjoy the position that america has enjoyed for the last few decades
a stronger position is one in which strategic resources and industries are on shore
everyone focuses on manufacturing but the real story is that actually engineering has begun to move offshore, and that is the actual problem from a strategic and security point of view
so i can see why the usa chose to retardmaxx now, because what they are doing currently should be part of a larger solution to their problem, but it remains to be seen as to whether they will fix the egress of actually important professional skills and knowledge
it will all come out in the wash, i would say that it's most likely that the usa will manage to hold on to its position for the next few decades at least
the smart money is on china eventually making a move to formally annex taiwan, unlike hong kong they can't move their people into positions of power in a more stealth way, so for the currently strategically important industry that is located in taiwan, the smart move is to go to whoever gives them the best deal, tariffs arent really a good enough tool to ensure that outcome by themselves, but as part of a suite of incentives they could be relevant
anyway, it will all play out in our lifetimes, i for one am looking forward to the future, although i cant help but feel some fear that we will see a large scale war in the pacific, which will obviously be awful for everyone everywhere
>>717465506oh so they brainwashed you, well i can't deny that is harder to get phisical stuff nowadays but i always do when i get the chance i fucking hate that miku is only on the digital version of sonic crosworlds and the phisical one only gives you some fucking stickers.

the geography is extremely unkind to any kind of invasion, there is quite a lot of firepower already there, and any buildup to invasion will be extremely obvious and will result in the dispatch of any number of fleets for security
if china were smart (they aren't) they would do it the way that civilized people have unified instead of by intimidation, but the people of taiwan seem to be uniquely immune to the chinkinese brand of information and political warfare
but the importance of taiwan is predicated on taiwan remaining strategically important because of the industry that is there currently, america is doing the smarter thing by attempting to onshore the vital commerce and industry that is there currently
taiwan has a pretty massive incentive to hold on to it all because it's what keeps them under uncle sam's umbrella, but i think it's more than likely that eventually the usa will onshore enough chip manufacturing that taiwan will become more trouble than its worth
be real, nobody actually cares about the plight of the taiwanese people, who deserve to be free from the yoke of foreign powers, and certainly deserve to be free from china, but nobody actually gets what they deserve on this gay earth, people only get what they can secure from others
>>717465872It's actually possible that some rich person or group does it. But the public should know that
a) prices will not go down, the company will set prices at the same as the international tariff price because anything less is just leaving money on the table
>Hypothetically that at least means more jobs and money staying in the US, right?and b) sure, but who makes the decisions about where that money goes? It sure isn't the fab workers (it COULD be, but unions are evil and icky in America), so americans pay a lot more for a ton of common goods, A tiny fraction get jobs that go out of their way to pay them as little as possible, and the money that was previously tariff revenue now goes to 1 person (or small group) who happened to have the money to build a fab

Americans don't want that because they don't believe in learning or expertise, they just want to go from "yeehaw, I run mah lawnmower, I know how things work" to working in a semiconductor fab. >>717460865I can't believe this obvious bait post got this many replies
>>717460865This anon gets it. Tariffs are a way for the government to do what the consumer will now, which is to stop rewarding greedy companies with revenue. The asian semiconductor industry acts like a monopoly, setting ever higher prices because they know people and companies will continue to buy their semiconductors.
People should have stopped buying at these high prices but people, especially Americans, are addicted to new technology. The best thing is for tariffs on asian semiconductors to go to 300% or higher so that the Americans stop buying which will end the revenue stream for the ultra-greedy asian semiconductor industry.
Then, in the void created by the high tariffs, American and European semiconductor companies will emerge, adding to the competition in the semiconductor industry, breaking the asian monopoly, which will ultimately bring prices back to within reason.
Summer of 2016, when the new top-of-the-line GTX 1080 cards hit the market, they were priced at $499 with $30 to $50 rebates. Yes, many people paid $450 for a brand new GTX 1080. Greed is the reason cards are as high as they are a mere nine years later.

>>717470335>I don't think they even broke ground yetthis is the site THREE YEARS ago, retard
they have done more than break ground.
So, this is something most of you won't know, regardless of being retarded or not, but when a big company does a big and important construction job, they are, beyond certain carefully controlled press releases, QUIET about it.
Microsoft is one of the most anal I know of, to use as an example.
They tore down 20-year-old buildings at the heart of their redmond campus, and have been rebuilding the section for a long time, putting in a 4 story 27 acre (per floor) parking garage with 3 sports fields on top, the largest geothermal electric plant west of the Mississippi river, and like 20 or so office buildings.
They have a set of AI set to comb places like facebook, instagram, and twitter (among other places) to catch unauthorized photos of any part of the site, which is about 72 acres in size, at ALL times.
For a while they had at least one drone flying around and watching the construction workers as well.
>>717470654i know this is a hard concept for you to understand, but you're simply incorrect because trumps first term did not extend past january 2021
