People have shorter attention spans than ever, they can barely make it through a youtube video let alone a novel. The only reason we still even have books is because a lot of normies think reading and talking about them makes them seem like intellectuals. A lot of normies also are really just buying audio books which doesn't work for the VN format.
Aside from all that VNs never really became mainstream in the west in the first place and still have the nerd/weeb stigma.
I don't think they will ever die completely though just due to how cheap they are to produce in the grand scheme of things.

Is there some secret twist I missed in this game or point when it picks up. I went though got 2 endings for the black haired girl (neither seemed particularly good not sure if there are more), a couple bad endings and I think one for one of the other girls. Then it basically said I had to replay from the perspective of the kid and I didn't really like him up to that point so I basically dropped it there.
There were hours of just casual talking which i normally don't mind but it was really repetitive between each section and the few dramatic moments I got seemed mediocre.

I find myself not reading "real" VNs that much and just read silly h-VNs that have humor and low stakes plots. I read through Kyonyuu Fantasy 5 recently and it's just so comfy, it got plenty of laughs from me and made a fap or two.

I think I like them because pure SoL is often too boring for me, but the typical real VN's plot takes itself too seriously with really bad cliche drama and character arcs. It's not interesting, and it's not relaxing either. Once the plot centers itself on generic drama from a mediocre conflict, I just drop it.

Steins;Gate is a legit 5/10 story with some cool moments
Muv;Luv unironically has some of the worst pacing I've ever seen in fiction, like what other series can unironically say "the story doesn't get good or even start for real until you're 30-50 hours in?" Alternative isn't even that good either. The first arc is a worse written version of Unlimited, the rebellion arc is fucking retarded and makes no sense in the context of a humanity that's literal months away from extinction, and the PTSD arc while good doesn't make up for the literal 50 hours of mediocrity before it. The two arcs after that are just an edgy shonen, except the cast lost their plot armor, so they all die in increasingly horrific ways for shock value and edge, culminating in one of the heroines being raped and then evaporated by the love of her life. The only good thing I can praise about the final arc of Muv Luv would be the final twist that the Aliens don't see us as intelligent beings plus the fact that the aliens humanitys been fighting are glorified miners and workers, and that if the ACTUAL soldiers showed up, humanity would instantly get BTFO. Cool concept. Shame the author never went anywhere with it.

Yeah I have a lot of mixed feeling on muv luv the good parts are really good and the premise is good but it has a lot of bullshit moments where it feels like they are trying too hard to force drama and plot hooks that go nowhere that just feel like bait. muv-luv is overrated
has some good moments though

I dunno how you find Muv-luv to be the best VN ever made. I read the whole thing and while I enjoyed parts of it I feel like I kinda wasted my time. Part of that is because it's too long for its own good and some sections felt like a chore to get through but I think it's mostly to do with the fact that I didn't care about or actively disliked a lot of its characters (namely Sumika but thankfully she's not in 2/3 of it, pretty hard to care about her or really anything that happens at the end of Alternative though)
However my favorite VN is Little Busters and I also really like Umineko so take that how you will

The most unforgettable horror porn game I've ever played. No other game had a bunch of elementary schoolers gangbang a teenage girl against a wall. And the teenage girl loved it. I can also describe in detail the things I dislike about Umineko if you think I'm just a fanboy or something. I'm just saying that I can do the same with whatever VN you will claim to be better, and I guarantee you that I will find more numerous and severe flaws there. I kinda agree. So many of the classics would be 2x as good if they cut out all of the unfunny slice of life moments. Don't get me wrong, I understand that exposition and slow paced scenes are necessary to let the story breathe and truly dive into the nuisances and personalities of the cast, but visual novels usually take this way too far. Umineko's flaws mostly stem from the fact it was one man's singular vision, which is also a positive. It's painfully close to Ryukishi's heart in some places in a way that isn't always good, but if he'd had someone telling him "Don't put that in, it's retarded" it would have been less fun overall. I do sometimes wish he'd written it in more of a vacuum though instead of so many scenes being responses to the fans

The protagonist Kageaki is cursed to kill a good person whenever he kills an evil person and has to balance his desire for peace and pacifism with his duty to take out the evil, Ginseigo, (his daughter), who became an insane murderer after a case of lead poisoning.

Whenever I read through VN threads I've noticed that people often times complain about the endings to a lot of them. What do you all consider your favourite VN ending/endings? For me I'd say it's any ending to Aselia the Eternal/Eien no Aselia. My two favourite VN's are Muv-Luv Alternative and Utawarerumono: Futari no Hakuoro and while I thought their endings were okay I still felt like I wanted more so I was left was a longing feeling. With Aselia on the other hand I felt extremely satisfied and thought it ended at the natural point. I liked how the other endings while not being necessary did help flesh out the world and I also loved the ending song too. It really hurt when the photo changed
