This game isn't nearly as bad as everyone thinks it is.

People just hate it because it's different.

Zelda 2 is great. But despite being a fan of it, I'll be the first to admit it does need a remake. And so does Miyamoto. He just won't greenlight one.

Never got the hate for it, it's always been one of my favorites and I still replay it about once a year. Been itching to replay it recently in fact. Wish they'd try making a new one in this style with how much modern Nintendo loves random sequels to old games.

Nah I hated it because it filtered 7 year old me like you wouldn't believe with that cave labyrinth right at the beginning of the game.

I like it but I don't find it very replayable. The journey is great, figuring everything out the first go-around, but going back to it is just kind of a chore. t. got to the second-to-last palace and lost his save

Zelda 2 is just a downgrade in every way from Zelda 1 and has a shitty, horribly balanced jarpig grinding system that has no place in Zelda.

Worse overworld, worse exploration, worse combat, worse dungeons, shitty magic system, horribly balanced jarpig grinding system, worse hitboxes, more obtuse progression, etc.

Only the most contrarian of retards would prefer it

I find it interesting how they would use remaking aspects of Zelda 2 as a means of benchmarking their new hardware, out of Miyamoto's own morbid fascination with remaking the game for it not changing from planning at all. I'm not sure what a remake would even do, functionally, though. The main annoying thing about Zelda 2 is Link's stubby little knife-sword and you couldn't retool that without it significantly changing how the game is balanced.

You could easily change Link's sword. But also add to the mechanics. Take for example shielding enemies. Have it so you still have a high and low attack. But change it so the player can control it better. Be able to stab high or low as well as hold the shield high or low independent of crouching. (You can swipe your sword down while still standing or attack high while crouching, etc). On top of that, they can add a shield bash move. Which is risky as it leaves you open. But if done at the right time, stuns the enemy/knocks their shield away.

And that's just basic combat improvements. The stuff a remake would really need to do is fix the myriad of issues (like enemies being able to attack from off screen or the clipping bug). Improve Link's speed and control to bring him up to the same level as enemies, while increasing enemy damage to keep it difficult. Retool the EXP system so it isn't as intimidating to players. Have more interactive NPCs and events. And so on. I can think of dozens of ways to improve the game.

Fair. Some of the stuff you mentioned reminds me of the arcade game Trojan, cool but tough game with a shield you can position in every direction. I guess I was thinking more in terms of a remaster i.e. minor tweaks at most, but yeah, you could absolutely retool a bunch of what the original game was going for and expand on it. Almost a wonder they didn't give Zelda 2 a pseudo-sequel instead of ALttP.

Map was awesome, loved the world. Still, was the worst Zelda till TotK came along.

This is the opinion of a zoom zoom who played the game 20 years after release on an emulator with save states and a guide to ensure that they never had to actually play the game. Kids in the late 80s, however, had to actually play the game and search for secrets, so they didn't end up at the final palace in 30 minutes and complain about having only gained a single level.

>Worse overworld, worse exploration
Zelda 1 was so bad about this it came with a map in the box AND they put one in Nintendo Power so people wouldn't get bored.
>more obtuse progression
Almost everything is hinted in NPC dialogue or clear from normal exploration, it's a fucking far cry from bombing and pushing every block in case there's some shit there.
>worse combat
You cannot be serious. It easily wins by default just for having additional moves and actual enemy variety.
>shitty magic system
So shitty it became a standard feature of almost every game after.
>horribly balanced jarpig grinding system
Legitimately a skill issue if you are having to grind in fucking Zelda 2. Half of the levels are basically given to you for free, you'd have to be avoiding exploring and hitting enemies at all to not end up with all of your stats maxed by the end.

I could maybe see you having a point about the dungeons and hit boxes in a general sense but in comparison to Zelda 1 they're hardly worse. Both games have copy pasted environments but at least in Zelda 2 there's platforming and some sequence breaking and enemies that are actually threatening.

Zelda 1 overworld was far easier to actually get around in though, you really didn't need the map.

In what sense? Cause when I think about exploring in Zelda 1 I think about tiny grids and hallways full of peahats and octoroks as opposed to 2's large open fields with avoidable enemy encounters.

Dude if you can't avoid enemies in LoZ what the fuck are you retarded
Anonymous No.717474438
>>717474095
I didn't say they were unavoidable, I was comparing them to 2 where the encounter itself is avoidable. The point is I don't think having to constantly fight or dodge enemies, especially in close quarters, makes for "getting around easier".

Who was supposed to run the kingdom at the end when you have not one but TWO Zeldas? And did Link propose a threesome at any point?

maybe give the fan-remake a chance.
I played that last year and it adds some quality of life stuff and adds some secret areas. Overall it felt easier than the original while still being a lot of fun.
