It doesn't play like Beatmania at all despite having the turntable motif shared. Beatmania is way more about a large number button presses on the beat while DJH has directional scratch patterns and crossfades/stabs. DJ Hero's community makes mod charts too and most of them are brand-new mashups or beat juggles (with a few charts of pre-existing turntablism sets).

I could rant and ramble about this but it wouldn't fit in a single post. I have spent literally thousands of dollars on Rock Band in my lifetime. Hardware, software, new consoles, etc. I am THE Rock Band guy in my life. When social gatherings are happening, people say "Dude, you're bringing Rock Band, right?" It's been like this since the original Rock Band came out. I've dilligently transferred my licenses from the original game up through to Rock Band 4. I bought the 360 > Xbone hardware adapter. I have so many songs it's a slog to scroll through. I am the furthest thing from unsupportive of the concept of Rock Band.

What I am, however, is realistic. Playing Rock Band 3 or 4 sucks absolute fucking cocks. The 360 is old and slow as shit. The Xbone sucks ass. The Series S or X is marginally better, but still slow. Despite having paid for thousands of songs, maybe 5-10% of them have been stolen from me due to licensing restrictions and losses over the years. I can only use a single style of instrument if I'm lucky. Don't even get me started on Harmonix being bought by Epic and the shitshow that is Fortnite Festival.

Now compare all of that to YARG. Yeah, I get to pirate every song. But guess what? I owned about 50% of the library as is, and about 40% of the total that I don't own literally isn't available to be purchased anymore since the Rock Band Network is dead. So fuck you, I'll be taking that too. On top of having the entire library ever released between GH and Rock Band, I have tens of thousands of custom songs at my fingertips - songs that Harmonix never had a snowball's chance in hell of licensing. Now stack on being able to use any plastic instrument ever made with a couple of clicks, and yeah, I'm going to pick YARG every time. There is nothing these people can do to satiate the demand for plastic instrument games, because the music industry is fucking retarded and licensing is hell. Hey, guess what? That's why Harmonix died!

Fuck it, I'm going to keep rambling. YARG has gone so fucking far in supporting shit that Harmonix themselves completely forgot about. Did you know that nearly the entire official Rock Band library has choreographed light shows and smoke machine timings? They sold a smoke machine kit and a tiny piece of shit LED in 2010 for like 6 months and then never again. YARG not only supports these accessories, but also added support for standard DJ hardware via DMX. You can buy any DMX-compatible lights you want, plug it in to your computer, and it just works. They were teasing adding support for character models to play along with the existing data in each track just a couple months ago.

Not entirely true, bands never liked 'em but they were absolutely necessary, kind of like dev / publisher relationships today where you need someone to handle the business side.
Doubly so for bands because they're usually made up of a bunch of teenagers / druggies getting into the stupidest fights imaginable
bands got to record and go on tour and get high as fuck and fuck underaged groupies, the labels would promote them, market them, and pocket the difference, that was the agreement

This is only when you assume the positive aspect and effect record labels had, which is just a fraction and temporary. For the most part they're a blight and, to the band's output, detrimental in the long run. This is why the 3rd record rule exists; the short period where the record label prescence and input had positive effects. By the 7th record... not so much

it's very rare you find bands that still have enough ideas to go beyond making a single album.

The music industry IS greedy, not a part of it but as a whole; it exists for the money, it's called industry for a reason and their grind of the bands kills them faster or straight up breaks them into something completely different the more input they have and they will try to meddle with their band's output. If anything it's amazing its prescence helped to make great music, almost a miracle. Record labels only use were logistics

You're right, theyโ€™ll fill this thing with washed out indie trash and maybe toss in one token classic track as bait, like โ€œSweet Child O' Mine,โ€ and call it a day. The licensing will be a joke too-say goodbye to any real metal or punk. Expect stuff like The 1975 and fucking Imagine Dragons and -- god help us -- some TikTok guitar loop nonsense.
